Streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins was live on YouTube, playing Fortnite with his friends. The conversation turned to Brime, a new streaming service that some had already seen as a competitor to Twitch. The Fortnite stars joked extensively about the name “Brime” and the theories surrounding the service.
Here was the situation: At the end of June, three strange events coincided in the streaming world:
- Microsoft shut down the streaming service Mixer
- streamers Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Michael “shroud” Grzesiek allegedly turned down a highly lucrative offer from Facebook and became free agents
- Twitch banned streamer Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm, with whom they previously had a long-term contract, without an apparent reason.
The fact that three of the world’s biggest streamers suddenly stood (and still stand) without a contract raised a lot of questions that called for answers. However, these have not been provided so far.
4chan theory suggests: Spotify enters streaming
Here was the theory: As if one wanted to bring these three facts together and explain them, a supposed leak appeared on the infamous site 4chan on Saturday, June 27, presenting a wild theory. It stated:
- Spotify would establish a new streaming service
- The streaming service had already contacted shroud, doc, and Ninja
- Dr Disrespect would have wanted to poach further streamers from Twitch, which led to his ban from Twitch
- The new service would announce important information on Monday, June 29.
This is how it relates to Brime: Shortly after the theory became known, users on Twitter noticed the account Brime, which was founded on June 25. This was supposedly a new streaming service. It followed the streamers Dr Disrespect, shroud, and Ninja and also announced a revelation for Monday.
Thus, it somewhat pretended to be exactly the mysterious streaming service described in the “4chan” post.
However, the service later admitted that it only had 4 employees and had nothing to do with Spotify.
Fortnite stars mock Brime
This is how Ninja reacts now: After a long broadcast pause, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins was now visible on YouTube with his friends CouRageJd, TimTheTatman, and DrLupo for an hour and a half. The four friends played Fortnite.
During this, the conversation repeatedly turned to Brime. His buddies apparently teased Ninja with “Brime” as is their way:
- They asked if they could maybe get the hashtag “WatchBrime” trending in the chat.
- Asked if they could get a few “Brime Time Subs”.
- TimTheTatman boomed, “It’s Brime Time” – a pun with the English “Prime Time,” the best broadcasting time.
“I officially switch to Brime”
Ninja finally said with a serious expression: “I went live on YouTube just to let everyone know that I am officially switching to Brime.” He then announced the new alleged URL where he would now be found on Brime.
Ninja also explained:
“Brime … folks. Someone jumped on this theory so quickly, and then that guy said, ‘I’m making a Brime Twitter account.’ He then followed me, shroud, and the Doc.”
Tyler “Ninja” Blevins.
Later, Ninja claimed again that he was now signing with Brime. His stream on YouTube was just a “publicity stunt.”
Finally, his wife Jessica Blevins asked if this streaming service was even real. Ninja smiled and replied: That was a very good question, but not one they were allowed to ask. How could she even dare to ask that?
Later he asked her why she couldn’t understand that it was “Brime Time” while his friends laughed in the background.
This is Brime’s response: They shared the clip of Ninja on their Twitter account and thanked Ninja for creating a new motto with “Brime Time.”
Quick PR action for attention
Here’s what’s behind it: Ninja and the other streamers apparently see Brime as a joke. Someone cleverly responded to a wild theory to garner additional attention for a project. Whether the Brime project is actually real or not seems to be of rather little significance to them.
From their perspective, such a hobby service, without a giant company behind it, cannot represent a serious alternative to streaming services like Twitch or YouTube. They find the wild theory amusing that went around the internet and the fact that someone quickly and cleverly capitalized on it. And they seem to be chuckling over the name as well.
After the conspiracy theory around Brime quickly fell apart and clarified its fate, one question remains open at the end. Why on earth did Twitch ban streaming star Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm? There is an excellent new theory:
This is the best theory of why Dr Disrespect was banned from Twitch
