Nightingale is a survival game with a PvE focus that can be played solo or cooperatively with friends, and invites players to dive into fantastic worlds through mystical portals. In a preview event, MeinMMO author Jacqueline had the opportunity to experience the first hours of Nightingale and was fascinated by the game’s character creation from the very beginning. She was also able to get a first impression of the open world.
In the survival game Nightingale, which will be released on February 20, you are stranded in a world full of dangerous Fae creatures, on a quest to find the magical city of Nightingale. In this world, you must survive, explore, and travel through portals to experience different biomes, either alone or with friends.

Why do I like the character creation so much? Nowadays, it is not uncommon to customize your character in games, especially in MMORPGs. This feature is also becoming increasingly common in survival games like Palworld.
So what makes this game different from others? In my opinion, the customizer is reminiscent of MMORPGs or Sims in its size, as there is hardly anything you can’t change. In addition to classic customizations like tattoos or scars, there are also features that are rarely seen, such as the opacity of your make-up.
I spent 1.5 hours alone in character creation, just to take a close look at everything and think about which eye color I liked better.
Additionally, you can also set your background story in the character editor. Here, there are 7 different options: Academician, Politician, Merchant, Hermit, Officer, Petty Criminal, and Vagabond.
You can also choose your age, which affects your character’s appearance in terms of wrinkles. Finally, you can select the difficulty level you want to start on and how well-equipped you want to be at the beginning.
“No character should look like another”
In a co-op session with the developers, I get to know the game better. In a joint co-op session with Inflexion Games CEO Aaryn Flynn and developer Neil Thompson, we play Nightingale together with a few other journalists.
At the beginning of our session, I talk to Aaryn about the character editor and am surprised by its size. Aaryn explains to me that their goal was for “no character to look like another and for everyone to be unique.”
During our session, we fought against Apex creatures, huge bosses that vary by area, traveled through different realms, fought enemies together, and learned more about the different portal maps in the game. For example, later on, we discovered practical features that allowed us to find Apex creatures using a displayed trail.
What is my overall first impression of Nightingale? Overall, I can say that I really enjoyed the first hours in Nightingale. It is particularly important to me in new survival games that they offer innovative aspects, and Nightingale has several of them.
I find it particularly impressive that you can travel to new areas through portals that are different each time, depending on the maps you use for traveling. Additionally, the magic aspect is not neglected, which offers many new possibilities, especially in the mid and end-game, such as tracking Apex creatures or jumping over higher obstacles.
Overall, the game has positively surprised me so far, and I am excited about what the studio has planned for the future.
