Today, on August 21, the new Transmog system will be introduced in New World. Through this system, you can transfer collected skins to your current equipment for free. However, there is a catch that has now become clear in the FAQ.
Correction: Initially, it was stated that you would have to store skins in the inventory and bank. This is not correct and has been amended.
How does Transmog work? After the update, you can unlock any armor or weapon skin that you have equipped, stored in your inventory, or in your bank for the system. For this, you will need a Transmog token.
Once registered, you can change the appearance of your gear at an outfit NPC anytime. This NPC is located in every major settlement and the change will cost you nothing.
So what’s the problem? The Transmog tokens are not very well received. Although you can get them for free by opening elite chests in the game or progressing through the Battle Pass, they are available in very limited quantities:
- From the chests, you only get one token per week! And with a drop probability of 1%.
- Even through the free Battle Pass, there are only 3 tokens total – at levels 15, 50, and 100.
As an alternative, the tokens are available for real money, but even then, many find the prices simply too high.

Thousands of skins, but far too few tokens
Is that really such a big problem? Players want Transmog so they can customize their appearance to their liking without having to forego perfect stats. However, those who want to collect all skins in the game face a huge problem.
The collected skins are not automatically unlocked, like in Guild Wars 2, but must be activated with the token. However, it is sufficient to have owned the skin once after the patch.
Now there are over 200 different skins for each weapon alone. With 14 different weapons and three different armor types, there are thousands of items in the game. According to NWDB, even a total of 17,461.
Gameplay-wise, it would also take over 200 years with the regular new Battle Pass to unlock everything. Or you pay real money:
- The most expensive package brings 50,000 lucky tokens for 41.99 euros.
- For 50,000 lucky tokens, you get 25 Transmog tokens.
- Unlocking all skins would therefore cost over 29,000 euros.
How is the system received? Not well. The system has been referred to multiple times as “dogshit”. Both the sheer number and the fact that PvP players and dungeon fans are completely left out are criticized.
Do other MMORPGs do it better? Yes, there are many titles where the wardrobe is free or costs in-game currency, like in WoW or the new Palia.
Guild Wars 2 allows you to register all skins for free, but wants Transmutation crystals for the changes. These can be obtained both in-game and for real money.
The difference here is that you have to rein in your urge to change yourself, rather than storing the skins. Moreover, in GW2, gold can always be exchanged for real money, allowing you to farm new crystals through many ways.
