The MMO New World celebrated its release on September 28, 2021. A central feature of the game is the faction selection starting at level 10. But what factions are there and which one should you choose? We from MeinMMO provide you with the information.
What are these factions? In New World, you have three factions to choose from, which differ significantly in their history and play style. You can join one of them from level 10. They are:
- The Marauders
- The Alliance
- The Syndicate
Why is the choice so important? The battles in the open world and the wars for fortresses are directly related to the factions. All three fight against each other. Additionally, there are special faction missions that differ slightly.

By joining a faction, you become bound to it with this character. You can only change factions every 120 days and cannot switch to the strongest faction on the server. The only alternative is to delete the character and recreate it. Since guilds are also bound to a faction, you should choose wisely.
Do you have to choose a faction? No, theoretically, the quest at level 10 can be ignored. However, if you do so, you cannot participate in open-world PvP, faction quests, and wars for fortresses.
What the factions offer
These are the Marauders: The Marauders are somewhat reminiscent of pirates. They value freedom more than power, they are strong and they place a high value on damage dealt.
This is the Alliance: The Alliance resembles crusaders. They are armored fighters who fight against evil on the island of Aeternum . The faction takes on the role of the purist heroes.
This is the Syndicate: In the Syndicate, the alchemists and mages of New World gather. Game Director Scot Lane describes them as a kind of “alternative version of Isaac Newton”. They are cunning, intellectual, and in search of forbidden knowledge.
Which faction should you choose
What bonuses do the factions bring? By joining a faction, you receive special faction missions, which include PvE and PvP tasks. Through these missions, you earn a currency that allows you to obtain specific faction gear.
Here, the choice of factions plays a small role because depending on the faction description, different gear is mentioned:
- Marauders place a strong focus on damage
- The Alliance, on the other hand, focuses more on heavy armor
- The Syndicate is supposed to value potions and versatile gear
However, the differences are primarily cosmetic and have no significant gameplay impact. After all, you can guarantee the best equipment through crafting.
Which faction is the best? Basically, in New World, you have free choice, as all factions do not differ significantly in gameplay. However, there are certain advantages and disadvantages that are more dependent on the status of your server than on the faction itself:
- Those who want to fight for fortresses should choose the faction that is the weakest on the corresponding server. Because guilds can never challenge fortresses of their own faction for war. Therefore, joining the strongest faction will result in the least chances for fortress battles.
- On the other hand, if you are more focused on PvE, you should join the strongest faction. Because there, even PvP missions in the open world can be completed without encountering too many enemy players.
You can recognize the dominance of the factions on the world map. Each faction has a different color when it controls areas. However, keep in mind that the status of the map can change at any time.
