What is Aeternum in New World? Aeternum is the name of the continent you can visit in New World. It resembles an America from the 17th century, being a fictional continent in the middle of a vast ocean.
Aeternum is a place full of magic and mysteries. Only there is the mineral Azoth, which contains great power but also great danger. The selfish use of Azoth led to the creation of the Corrupted, a hostile faction.
Visually, Aeternum impresses with strong contrasts and diverse regions. The contrasts were also emphasized in a developer diary. However, the further north you go, the darker the world becomes.
What does Aeternum mean? The word comes from Latin and translates to “eternal time” or “eternity” in German.
Aeternum offers beautiful landscapes and mysteries
What does it look like in Aeternum? The world of Aeternum is beautiful and very diverse. You can explore many landscapes there:
- snow-covered landscapes
- coastal areas
- forests
- open meadows
- steppes
- deserts
- caves
In the northern regions, where you primarily encounter the Corrupted, it is particularly dark and threatening. Here, Azoth has worked its influence and corrupted the landscape.
But you will also repeatedly encounter the mineral in southern areas. You can recognize it by the shimmering surfaces, which are either blue (uncorrupted) or red (corrupted).
What can you discover in Aeternum? Even before our arrival, many adventurers had found their way to the island. Therefore, you will encounter abandoned towns and shipwrecks.
The old adventurers left behind records that you can find in the open world, from which you can learn more about the history of Aeternum.
In addition, there was an ancient civilization, of which there are still ruins and temple complexes. The ancient civilization even managed to use Azoth for good and meaningful purposes:
In Aeternum, there are also huge, mythical beasts known as Guardians. They are in harmony with nature.
However, whether they are friendly or hostile towards us is currently unknown.
Aeternum is dotted with fortresses and war
What about the fortresses? The continent Aeternum is divided into many different areas. In each area, there are several fortresses and a settlement. Within the settlement, you even have the option to engage in housing.
In large parts of the continent, there is this division into areas with fortresses that you can fight over. New World offers you the option to join one of three factions to expand control over the continent.
However, the areas high in the north are controlled by the Corrupted. A fortress was shown in the developer diary about Aeternum that was under the control of the NPC faction. So there are also fortresses there.
How dangerous is Aeternum? Many dangers lurk on the continent of Aeternum:
- Players from the other two factions, where PvP is supposed to be optional in the future.
- The Corrupted as a hostile NPC faction that can even attack your fortresses.
- Wild animals and particularly strong beasts that have also been influenced by the mineral Azoth.
You can confront these dangers with swords, as well as with firearms and gunpowder. New World takes place exactly at the time when technologies clash. Aeternum itself also brings a magical component to the game with Azoth.
