Crafting plays an important role in New World. There are a total of 17 disciplines in which you can improve and through which you can craft buff food, housing furniture, and gear. In fact, you should even be able to craft the best armor and weapons in the game through crafting. We at MeinMMO explain how exactly that works.
What crafting disciplines are there? The crafting in New World is roughly divided into 3 different tasks:
- Gathering – for example, through lumberjacking, mining, or fishing
- Refining – which allows for wood, iron, and other materials to be processed further
- Crafting – here you can craft armors, weapons, jewelry, furniture, and buff food
Each discipline can be leveled from level 1 to level 200. The highest level is required to craft endgame gear, while you can only craft common items at the lower levels.
You don’t have to restrict yourself to one profession; you master every profession at any time. So you don’t have to first go to a teacher, you can just get started.
How do I level the different disciplines? You level by using the discipline. With every tree you fell, you level lumberjacking. With every weapon you craft, you level weapon smithing.
While the first levels are relatively easy to achieve, you will need to craft more complex items for the higher levels. But this will pay off in the endgame.
Can you level every discipline immediately? Yes, once you have completed the tutorial, you can essentially perform any profession right away. However, certain gathering professions require appropriate tools, and refining and crafting require specific crafting stations that you can find in settlements.
The higher you level a crafting discipline, the better the crafting stations need to be. However, such upgrades can only be made by the company that controls the respective settlement.
The gathering professions
How do these professions work? When gathering, it’s about using specific tools to harvest various materials:
- For lumberjacking you need an axe
- For mining a pickaxe
- For harvesting a sickle
- For tracking and skinning a knife
- For fishing a fishing rod
All these tools can be crafted directly after the tutorial at the campfire at the watchtower or at your personal campfire. Later, you can craft higher-tier tools through the engineering profession. They work on the same principle as equipment, and are thus available in 5 tiers:
- Wood
- Iron
- Steel
- “Starmetal” (the English translation is still pending)
- Orichalcum
You can directly equip the tools in your inventory to save space.
What can be harvested? This varies a bit from profession to profession:
- Lumberjacking offers different types of wood at levels 0, 50, 100, and 175
- Through mining you can already access stone and iron at level 0 and at levels 10, 20, 45, 50, 100, 105, 110, 155, and 175 you can access additional materials
- Harvesting offers simple plants, fibers, and mushrooms as early as level 0 and new materials at levels 30, 100, and 175
- The level in skinning determines what level the animals you can skin have
- In fishing, there are 11 different types of fish that you can catch
One highly sought-after material that you can obtain through harvesting are fibers. You need them, for example, for the fishing rod. In this guide we explain exactly how to get fibers in New World.
Helpful for gathering is also the map from Newworldfans.com, which shows you exactly where the respective occurrences for the materials are (via Newworldfans.com).
The refining professions
How do these professions work? Refining is about upgrading the materials found through gathering professions:
- Through melting, raw materials like iron or orichalcum become iron bars or orichalcum bars. Additionally, wood can be turned into charcoal here.
- In woodworking, raw wood is turned into wood planks
- In leatherworking, you make leather pieces from animal hides
- In weaving, you create fabrics from plant fibers
- In stonemasonry, raw stone is turned into solid stone blocks
The various professions are quite self-explanatory.
The crafting professions
How do these professions work? The crafting professions are about creating finished gear from the gathered and refined materials. This applies to at least 6 of the 7 professions:
- In blacksmithing, you create weapons
- In armor smithing, you create armors
- In engineering, you create gathering tools, the weapons musket and spear, as well as the ammunition
- In jewel crafting, you create jewelry
- As a carpenter, you create furniture for housing
- Through arcana, you create staves and potions
Unlike the other professions, the cooking profession is somewhat different. It does not require a refining profession as an intermediary step. As a cook, you create food and are especially dependent on skinning and fishing. Additionally, there are different types of food that either restore health points or provide buffs.
How exactly does crafting work? We will walk through the crafting process using blacksmithing as an example, although the various professions hardly differ.
- You can create the first wooden weapons directly at level 0 and in a level 1 forge, requiring only wood and leather as materials.
- You can already create iron weapons with skill level 0, but you need a level 2 forge. For the weapons, you need iron, wood, and leather, and you can also add special items and azoth.
- Special items can give weapons new effects
- Adding the currency azoth increases the chance for additional attributes and values
- For weapons of level 3 and above, you need specific blueprints, a higher skill level as a blacksmith (between 25 and 200), as well as a forge of level 3 or higher. The maximum level of a blacksmith’s forge can be 5 and depends on the respective settlement you are in.
Basically, every time you craft weapons level 3 and above, you have a chance for a special effect or additional slots for gems that you can use to upgrade the weapons.
How do you craft endgame gear? A legendary weapon requires a blueprint, a forge at level 5, and a skill rank as a blacksmith between 175 and 200. Additionally, you need several rare materials that also require the highest levels at the crafting stations and ranks between 175 and 200.
Furthermore, you need the appropriate special items, enough azoth, and a bit of luck. Because your attributes and gem slots ultimately depend on chance. You can only influence the special effects with the help of the special items.

Where do you get the special items? It’s still unclear. According to the developers, you can get them with a small chance from trees, rocks, and various enemies. In the beta, we had 3 of these special items in our inventory at level 10 with a strong focus on crafting.
