On July 23, the beta of Amazon’s MMO New World begins. We take a look at the mood in the community. The online game is not only met with joy.
What is New World? Amazon’s MMO places you on the mysterious island of Aeternum. There, supernatural forces prevail, which the settlers – that is, you – have to deal with.
New World was announced as a survival MMO with a focus on PvP, but it has since changed significantly. PvP still plays a role, such as in the conquests of forts, but PvE elements have also been added. The changes were made based on feedback from the alpha testers.
Basically, you can now expect an MMO with survival elements, quests, and PvP battles.
There is some skepticism about New World
When does the beta start? Already on July 23, those who have beta access can participate. You can gain such access by pre-ordering New World or by signing up on the official website of the MMO. With some luck, you will then receive a key.
What is the mood in the community? New World divides the community somewhat. This has several reasons:
- The rather short-term adjustment of the game from a survival MMO focused on PvP to a PvE MMO with PvP elements has made some players skeptical. Is it possible to change an online game so significantly within about half a year without compromising quality?
- The beta, which was supposed to take place in May, was postponed due to the coronavirus crisis – and the release was postponed as well – which has not strengthened confidence.
- Amazon’s shooter Crucible flopped with players and had to return to beta – and that only 43 days after its release.
- There is criticism of the design of the weapons, especially the legendary ones. According to some players, they simply do not look interesting enough. The question arises whether the design could affect the motivation to obtain these items.
Nevertheless, there are players who are looking forward to the release. New World appeals to some MMO fans with its interesting scenario. Furthermore, it is one of the few major Western MMOs set to release in the near future. Thus, there is great hope for the genre.

- Der_Zocki explains on MeinMMO: “New World is not even close to being finished and the release is supposed to be in less than 2 months. I’ve been playing the alpha for quite some time and unfortunately can only report the following: Bugs, exploits, and frustration are the order of the day.”
- Selfish Lee Everett writes on Steam: “This is the greatest game I have ever played. The hype is real, people!”
- Feizzed expresses excitement on Twitter: “I can hardly wait for the beta to start.”
- ZepGup states on Twitter: “OMG – Let me play already. I was in the original alpha and had a fantastic time. I can’t wait to see what has changed.”
As you can see, opinions are quite divided. The start of the beta on July 23 will show how good New World really is.
