How do the battles of the new MMO New World (PC) feel? According to a tester, they offer many interesting nuances and represent the best part of the online game.
What is there to report about the battles of New World? Reddit user JorisOP is very enthusiastic about the battles after his demo session at the Stress Test of New World and reports extensively on his experience. He explains in great detail what specifically excites him about the combat.
According to him, it is difficult to compare the battles of New World with those from other MMOs. He explains that those who play For Honor, Dark Souls, Monster Hunter World, and Neverwinter will likely find it easier to adapt to the combat system than fans of Guild Wars 2, Black Desert Online, Tera, and World of Warcraft.
According to JorisOP, the battles are those of an action RPG in an MMO.
It is important to learn new techniques and to improve and master the basics. It’s not so much about using everything you’ve learned en masse. Rather, you need to tease out the nuances from your abilities. This will take you much further in battles.
It’s all about the nuances
How do the battles unfold? JorisOP tells an interesting story of a battle, which well illustrates what he means:
I dueled and was really taken down by an alpha tester on the last test day. He offered to teach me some martial arts and showed me something I can only call “forbidden knowledge.” Things like feints, dodging while lying down, the advantages of each weapon, and so on. After that, I didn’t lose a single duel for the rest of the day.
I thought that given my gaming experience I was already a slightly above-average PVPer, but in the span of ONE DAY, I learned enough to place myself above 90% of the player base.

Interestingly, despite his level of 36, which he was able to achieve during the stress test, he could still learn so much more and improve significantly.
But he also explains:
Many who are excited about New World are people who have only played MMOs in the past, so understandably they will be very skeptical of this combat system. I hope they realize that it’s not bad, just different.

There is also criticism: However, not everyone agrees with him. Others find the combat rather sluggish and restrictive.
- Sandbox_Hero writes, for example: “That you cannot cancel attacks or “transform” them into dodging or blocking was pretty frustrating. It makes the game overly defensive rather than reactive, as every action combat game aims for. You have to block and wait until an attack comes, instead of viewing the attack and reacting to block it. I didn’t like that at all.”
- The Gladex explains: “The combat is fun at the beginning. But if you fight against an opponent often enough, the fun disappears, and the battles quickly become tedious. The first few times it’s fun to fight against an enemy because you don’t know exactly how to approach them. But their movements are so slow and predictable, once you learn them, it becomes flat. It doesn’t present any challenge to dodge attacks.”
- bay_watch_colorado on the other hand thinks: “The combat system seems well thought out. I like it. It’s not just tab-targeting and skill-spamming. It’s refreshing. I actively block and dodge and I plan when to use my abilities.”
A new testing phase for New World starts on August 25. Alpha testers, beta-registered users, and pre-orders can participate and get an impression of the MMO’s battles and also get a general insight into the gameplay.
As the release of Amazon’s New World has been postponed to next year, you can check out other online role-playing games in the meantime if you wish.
