The MMO New World (Steam) received an update last Thursday. The patch triggered a lot of criticism: Amazon is accused of secretly making their MMO harder to disguise a lack of content. Moreover, there are too many bugs in the game. The reviews on Steam deteriorated dramatically over the weekend, on November 20 and 21.
How much did the Steam reviews drop?
- Overall, New World currently has 71% positive reviews – “mostly positive”
- In the last 7 days, there are only 59% positive reviews – “mixed”
- There was a significant negative spike on Saturday, November 20 – with 1,899 negative reviews against only 336 positive reviews. Only 15% of all incoming reviews were positive.
Steam user with 430 hours criticizes secret changes to New World
What bothers people? The main accusation is that Amazon has made New World “even grindier” or “harder”.
The German user LocDog has spent 434 hours in New World. He is annoyed that with patch 1.1.0. many secret changes were made to New World (via steam):
- There is now less loot in elite chests to prolong the grind in the endgame
- Enemies have 5-10 times more health points, so fights last longer
- Moreover, the enemies in end areas are now harder, the more players hit them
In addition to this criticism of the endgame, there are ongoing complaints about the numerous bugs and exploits in New World.
Amazon promises to take a closer look

They want to take another look at the endgame, especially the elite chests and drop rates, so it feels rewarding to complete challenging content.
Moreover, they believe that expeditions should play a bigger role in the endgame and want to adjust them in the coming months.
