The MMO New World sparked hope among many players because a large company like Amazon is behind the sandbox game. However, overnight, all videos from the official YouTube channel disappeared.
Update September 26: We inquired with Amazon and received a statement. According to them, New World will not be discontinued:
New World is alive and doing well. More information will come soon.
It seems that a complete overhaul of the MMO is in progress, which is why all trailers and gameplay footage were removed.
What exactly happened? Overnight, all videos on the official YouTube channel of New World were deleted. All teasers and trailers that were there are now gone.
Since the first alpha, which ended in June, was completely under NDA, this was one of the few places where you could find material about New World.
What does this mean for New World? It is certain that the MMO has become extremely quiet lately. There has been no sign of life on the official channels since the end of the alpha.
Recently, Amazon only mentioned that some developers who also worked on New World will be involved in a new Lord of the Rings MMO.
Many good approaches, but in the end just boring survival?
What is New World? Amazon’s MMO is supposed to be a mix of MMORPG and survival game. As a player, you find yourself in a new world reminiscent of 17th-century America, just with a bit of magic and the undead.
The main focus of the game is on the fight for fortresses controlled by guilds. The sandbox game allows you to design your own fortresses, for which you need to gather materials from the environment.
Your skills are determined by your gear, and the looks very nice and realistic.
What is happening currently in the MMO? Currently, it has become very quiet around New World. The developers wanted to focus intensely on the game’s overhaul after the end of the first alpha.
Players criticized in the tests primarily the boring combat system and unbalanced guild sizes. This is said to have led to battles being decided by size rather than skill.
On the other hand, performance and the developers’ willingness to accept criticism are said to stand out positively.
Will New World ever be released?
What does the absence of the videos mean? If Amazon decided to remove the videos, it means for the game:
- Either that New World is being heavily revised and the old video material is inaccurate
- or that New World is being discontinued, as has already happened with other Amazon games.
We do not yet know the exact reason, but we have already requested a statement from Amazon regarding this.
Could New World be discontinued? The gaming division of Amazon is currently not in a good place:
- The first game Breakaway was playable at Gamescom 2017. They then decided to fundamentally revise the game, until it was discontinued in April 2018.
- In June 2019, dozens of employees from the gaming division were laid off during E3. Allegedly, other projects were canceled to focus on Crucible and New World.
Whether New World has also been affected, we do not know. However, we will keep you updated.
