New World does some things differently than classic MMORPGs. This is why players from WoW or GW2 miss a few convenience features. This includes a minimap that provides the important information from the large map. Two players were so bothered by it that they created one themselves.
Update 17.10.2021: Meanwhile, an employee from Amazon has commented in the official forums about the map and mentioned that using it can lead to penalties (via newworld.com).
What have the two players done? The reddit user mobrid posted a short video showcasing a minimap that he and a friend built together.
They placed the map just above the abilities and integrated the details there that would otherwise be found on the normal map. You essentially have a small section of the map always visible, without needing to open the large map.
Is such a map really necessary? For some players yes, as they are currently frustrated with the maps in the cities. For example, if you are looking for the trading post or a crafting station, you find detailed information about it on the map. However, this always zooms out automatically.
That’s why the user mobrid titled the thread “I always lose track of where things are in the cities.”
Those who want to navigate quickly must first open the large map and then also zoom in. With the minimap, this tedious work is no longer necessary. Additionally, it shows all crafting materials in the surrounding area.
Is the map legal? This has not been clarified yet. The program Overwolf is used for the map, where you can also download the minimap. Overwolf only places an additional graphic over the game for the player. The client is not modified.
However, the Terms of Service for New World on this point – as with many other MMORPGs – are rather vague.
It states: “Do not cheat and do not use software or services that give you an unfair advantage, e.g., through unattended play or game modifications.” (via Amazon). Here one can debate whether the map provides an “unfair advantage” or not.
There is no guarantee that you will not be banned for such a minimap.
How does the map fare? The thread about the minimap received over 4,500 upvotes and is therefore one of the most successful in the New World subreddit. Many users celebrate the implementation of the minimap and wish that Amazon takes action and implements something similar.
