Tomorrow, on September 28, 2021, New World will be released. The MMO was originally announced as a PvP game, but has since undergone a strong shift towards PvE. MeinMMO takes a look at the game and explains who might find it interesting.
What is New World? The new MMO from Amazon takes place in the dark world of Aeternum, which you can explore with your character and in which you can face various challenges. The focus is on:
- An open world with events, bosses, and beautiful landscapes
- Various dungeons for 5 players
- A deep and vital crafting system
- PvP in the form of faction battles and sieges
New World does away with classes and allows you to choose your play style with the various weapons and suitable gear. A combat system is implemented where you must actively aim and dodge. However, it is significantly slower and more tactical than in titles like ESO or Guild Wars 2.
When does New World release? New World celebrated its release already on Tuesday, September 28, at 8:00 AM German time. The preload is expected to start around 5:00 PM on September 27.
New World can only be played on PC at launch. Console versions for PS5 or Xbox Series X/S have not been announced yet.
Checklist – Should I play New World?

New World is a fresh MMO with a lot of hype
Why should I check out New World? New World is considered the big MMO hope for 2021. Particularly highlighted are the crafting system, the beautiful game world, and the sieges in PvP.
Regarding crafting, New World offers various skills through which you can create weapons, armor, ammunition, furniture, and food. The special feature is that you can obtain the best gear in the game – the legendary items – through crafting.
However, the effort is significant, as you need many materials and some luck for the right stats and bonus effects.
In the open world, you will encounter various settlements, biomes, and beautiful landscapes. However, there is criticism of the quest system in the game world, which many describe as monotonous and uninspired. The tasks mostly consist of typical “Kill X” and “Collect Y” quests.
What about the endgame? In the endgame, you can expect 6 different dungeons, world bosses, the PvP mode “Outpost Rush” for 40v40 battles, and the sieges in 50v50. Whoever wins such a battle controls the settlement and can determine taxes, among other things.
Amazon has particularly impressed many fans with the new content released between September 2020 and July 2021. This includes all dungeons, new weapons, new areas, a revision of many quests, and fishing. More about this here:

Is it worth it for theme park fans? Anyone who has primarily played games like WoW or Final Fantasy XIV will need to prepare for some adjustments in New World:
- There are no classes; equipment determines the playstyle
- In the combat system, enemies are not automatically selected; you must aim, often during long animations
- There is no classic story to follow. The focus is on the battle between the factions, although you can learn a little about the background of the world through notes in the open world and dungeons.
Nevertheless, New World could become your game. Because of the crafting, the conflict between the factions, and the importance of a guild, it is somewhat reminiscent of old-school MMOs. Additionally, the dark setting is relatively rare in MMORPGs.

Is it worth it for players who don’t like classic MMORPGs? Yes, especially if you come from the survival direction. Because gathering in the open world, crafting and housing, and PvP should be familiar to you.
However, those who prefer to go solo may find it harder in New World. While you can easily reach the max level of 60 and explore the world, if you want to be taken along later for dungeons or fortress battles, you will need to interact with other players. There is no dungeon finder like in WoW.
Who should not play it?
- Those looking for a classic tab-targeting MMORPG like WoW or FFXIV are wrong in New World.
- Fans of twinks won’t be satisfied, as you can only have one character per server cluster.
- Anyone who is not excited about PvP – which mainly takes place in instanced battles – might get bored quickly with the endgame, as some content is still missing.
- Those expecting a classic hero’s story like in Guild Wars 2 or ESO will be disappointed but can at least look forward to some story content in the dungeons and around the mysterious material Azoth.
New World is intended to be continually expanded after release
How will New World continue? After the release, New World is supposed to receive continuous new content. What and when exactly the new contents will come has not yet been revealed. However, a roadmap is expected to be available shortly after release.
