As part of the PC Gaming Show, Amazon released a new trailer for the MMO New World. It was about the combat system. However, some comments on the trailer, also here on MeinMMO, are rather negative. They find the graphics not modern enough.
What kind of trailer is this? The new video named “Combat Unleashed” showcases some short scenes featuring gameplay from the new MMO New World.
The focus is on battles between players and against monsters. However, some sections only show monsters or landscapes.
The video was released along with some interviews and the announcement of the beta starting in July.
What is the problem with the trailer? Although battles and gameplay are shown in the trailer, there are some voices that view the video negatively.
They criticize primarily two things:
- On one hand, many of the scenes from the video have already been used as clips in other videos.
- On the other hand, there are voices criticizing the game’s graphics. They expected a prettier and more modern game.
The first point of criticism can be quickly confirmed. In fact, many of the scenes have already been used in teasers or developer diaries. For example, the battles from second 15 can also be found right at the start of the video “Call to Arms,” where the combat system was introduced in more detail.
But how about the graphics? Is it really that bad?
Is the graphics of New World modern enough?
What is the problem with the graphics? The latest trailer showcases a rather colorful and slightly cartoonish game world. Some did not expect this, as New World has been seen as a game reminiscent of the colonization of America, which is also suggested by the name.
Although developers have distanced themselves from this setting and are relying on a fictional world, the idea of realism still clings to the game.
Another point of criticism is the animations and movements of the characters. These appear weaker than what one is used to from modern games.
MeinMMO reader Nico summarizes his perspective under our interview with the developers as follows:
So, the trailer is not good. I think it looks extremely plastic. Maybe it is due to the camera perspective, but when they are fighting, the world they are in feels somehow like a foreign body or the other way around.
Criticism of the graphics can be found in the comments of the trailer, especially on IGN’s channel, quite frequently. Besides the animations, the characters in general and the lack of shadows are also criticized.
Some viewers even wonder if the game received a graphical downgrade or if the developers maybe did not choose the highest graphics settings.
Did New World ever look better? In some developer diaries, the shown scenes actually look more polished and beautiful. However, these primarily involved landscapes, such as in the video about the game world Aeternum.
The short battle teasers on Twitter already presented a slightly different picture, although the quality was also somewhat worse due to the platform.
Looking even further back, to the time before the major overhaul at the end of 2019, we see that the graphics have not changed significantly, and even back then the animations appeared slightly delayed. You can see this, for example, in our video preview of New World from February 2019.

Is New World graphically good enough for 2020?
Preferences are known to vary and this applies to the graphics of games as well. Because besides the negative comments, there are users who like the style of New World:
- Crufix46 writes: “I like how the game looks. It seems full of adventure.”
- Majid Salhi says about the trailer: “It seems to be a good MMORPG, the graphics are not like the Unreal Engine 5 demo, but the content and details appear to be more efficient than in other MMORPGs.”
Additionally, users Navhkrin and Daniel Muñoz report under the IGN video that the playable version of New World is said to look better than it does in the video. Whether this is truly the case will likely only be revealed in the beta in July.
