What is fish oil used for? You probably landed on this guide because you want to start cooking in New World. Fish oil, along with nuts, is a basic ingredient for the cooking oil that you need in many recipes. Besides cooking oil, fish oil is also used to make fish preserves.
How do I get fish oil? Fish oil cannot be crafted; it is obtained when you process caught fish. You can process items and fish directly in your inventory. Select the “Process” option after right-clicking on a fish, or simply left-click while holding down “S”.
The chance of getting fish oil along with fish fillets is about 33% based on our experience. However, you can get more than 1 fish oil at a time. The chance of this has been increased in the past.
Where can I find fish? You can obtain fish through fishing or by purchasing them at the trading post. However, since fishing in New World is not difficult, it only requires some reaction time and timing, we recommend that you catch the fish yourself. You can open the fishing menu with F3 if you have a fishing rod equipped. Any common and uncommon fish are suitable for processing.
Start fishing and use it effectively
Where do I get a fishing rod? You can either craft your own fishing rod with a few materials at your campsite or obtain one through the quest.
You only need the following materials for a fishing rod:
- 1 wood

Where is the best place to fish? Throughout the world, there are special fishing spots (“Hot Spots”). Fishing spots are distributed across several bodies of water in Aeternum and have 1 to 3 stars. The stars indicate the quality of the fishing spot.
On the compass and the map, you can recognize the spots with a fish symbol and the stars depicted below. At fishing spots, you can catch fish particularly well, but you need a certain level in fishing to recognize them (i.e., to see them as markers on the map).
Should I use bait when fishing? Generally, this is recommended. Because using bait increases the chance of catching better fish and getting less trash from a body of water. Trash refers to items like boots or other household goods. More fish also means more opportunities to obtain fish oil through processing.
When fishing, you can not only catch fish but also pull other items from the water, such as materials or even rare chests. So the activity is worth it, especially since using bait makes you much more efficient if you just want to farm fish oil.
