New World: Guide to the Heart Jewels, the ultimate ability

With the patch on October 18, 2022, New World received not only the new area Brimstone Sands but also some fresh features. One of these are the Heartgems, which grant you an additional ability. We at MeinMMO will reveal how you can obtain these and what abilities exist.

What are Heartgems? Heartgems are an item that you can equip like a weapon. This item unlocks a special ability depending on which Heartgem you equip. The Heartgems come in various tiers, and you can switch them out like a weapon at any time to customize your ability.

Update from July 19, 2024: We have added the legendary Heartgems that have been released in the meantime.

How do Heartgems work exactly? Heartgems come in three tiers: Minor (blue), Major (purple), and Legendary (orange). In total, there are 15 legendary runes with different effects, which we will present in detail later in a list.

If you possess a Heartgem, you can equip it in your inventory. A new ability will then unlock on the “G” key. You can use this ability in the future, provided you have charged it up.

You charge the ability by performing light and heavy attacks, actively blocking damage, or healing allies. Once you use the ability, you will need to recharge it completely again. There is no cooldown.

How you can obtain and upgrade the Heartgems

Where do I get the first Heartgem? You get it by completing the Quest “Secrets of the Heartgem”, which also explains the basics of this new system. You receive it from the NPC Anna Rozsa northeast of the city of Neukorsika in the new area of Brimstone Sands. This is a side quest that is only unlocked after you have completed the prologue quest of the area.

Additional Minor Heartgems (the first tier) can be obtained as drops in dungeons or through crafting:

  • Minor Heart Rune of Cannon Shot – As a drop in the dungeon “Barnacles and Black Powder” or for 8,000 materials from the dungeon
  • Minor Heart Rune of Dark Ascent – From the dungeon “Heart of Storms” or for 8,000 materials from the dungeon

How do I upgrade the runes? Each of the Minor Runes can now become a Major Rune (purple). For this, you always need:

  • The respective Minor Rune
  • 5 Rune Stones
  • 5 Gypsum Balls
  • 5,000 Shadow Shards
  • 5 Corrupted Magnetite
  • 3 Sulfur – a new material from Brimstone Sands

To turn the Major Runes into legendary runes, you also need materials for the upgrade. Here, however, it gets interesting. Because each Major Rune can become three different legendary runes.

What do I need for the legendary runes? The basic materials are the same for all runes. You need:

  • 10 Gypsum Balls
