Mounts are now a topic in New World. They were introduced with the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion in October 2023, and there are three different types, along with various rewards. We at MeinMMO will share everything important with you in this guide.
How do you unlock the first mount? First, you need to reach level 25. Once you have done that, a new quest icon resembling a horseshoe will appear on the map. The quest is called “Wander of the Wilderness” and starts in the city of Windkreis.
For the quest, you must first travel north of Everfall, speak with an NPC, and then talk to a Beast Lord in the vicinity. The entire quest is very self-explanatory. At the end, you will receive the horse as your first mount in your inventory.
The inventory now also has a new tab where you can modify the horse, for example, with “shoes,” saddlebags, and other accessories. However, you first need to level the horse.
What happens next? First, you have to interact with your horse. For that, you will receive a quest to complete certain races. Additionally, you can acquire new skins and unlock two more mounts. These are available at levels 45 (Wolf) and 65 (Lion).
How does the horse play? The horse can be summoned with the X key, even while running, but not during combat. At first, it is slightly faster than normal running and also has a sprint function with the left shift key. However, sprinting consumes stamina, as does jumping.
Over time, the horse will become faster and gain more stamina. However, you will need to level it first.
If you are attacked while riding, you will fall off the mount. However, there is a small tolerance mechanic for weak enemies, so you won’t be immediately thrown off by them.
Training, leveling, and equipping the horse
How do you level the horse? Right after you get the mount, you will receive a quest for a horse race. It rewards you with so much experience that you immediately unlock the first saddlebags. Later, the horse races split into two types:
- Tour – Find the fastest route to the finish line.
- Rallies – Reach each checkpoint in order before time runs out.
Secondly, you will learn to craft simple mount food. For that, you will need and receive the following directly from the quest NPC:
- 3x Simple Mount Food Supplements
- 1x Barley
- 1x Water
- 1x Milk
You can equip the food like your own and then mount the horse to feed it. Afterwards, you will receive a recipe without the supplements, but with honey. The four raw materials are very easy to obtain. The mount food supplements are regularly available from quests and races.
As you progress, you will complete new quests, participate in additional races, and feed extra food to level up your mount.
Small tips: You can make the stable at the quest NPC your home to return directly to this “inn” from anywhere. Also, during races, ride on the paths, as you also benefit from the speed bonus on horseback.
How do I improve my mount? In the character menu, you can equip your mount with a total of four accessories, with the two saddlebags being purely cosmetic. The shoes and the buckle provide additional effects for higher speed, better jumping, or more sprint stamina.
You can obtain better items initially through mount quests and for reaching higher levels. You can see the exact rewards when you click on “Riding” under skills.

How do I get new skins?
- The NPC in Everfall, where you completed the first quests, offers you the first horse skin for purchase. Benson costs 10,000 gold.
- The Golda skin can be earned through mutations in dungeons.
- Various other horse skins are available for real money in the shop.
The situation is quite similar for the other two mounts. For the wolves, there is a skin from the merchant, one from mutations, and more in the shop. The lion has another skin from the free battle pass.

How do I get the wolf? First, you need to reach level 45 with your character. Additionally, you apparently first need to level your horse to access the Greywolf merchant.
After that, you will automatically receive the wolf through the mount questline.

How do I get the lion? First, you need to reach level 65 with your character. Moreover, you apparently first need to level your horse and wolf to access the lion merchant.
