How does fishing work in New World? Fishing in the new MMORPG is a life skill, like most other things you can do in the meantime. It falls into the same category as harvesting vegetables or mining ore. Overall, you can level fishing up to 200 levels.
It follows the same pattern: The more you fish, the better you become at it. Of course, you also need the right tools, in this case, a rod and preferably bait, although this is not necessarily required.

Where can you fish? You can fish anywhere there are so-called hotspots. These come in three different tiers and each contains rarer and larger fish than the previous level.

Basically, New World differentiates between two types of waters: saltwater and freshwater. There are significant differences between possible fish and bait that you should use.

What types of fishing rods are there? Just like the tools of other life skills, there are fishing rods in New World in 5 different versions, each requiring different materials. You can craft all fishing rods at a campfire of your choice.
For the first rod made of simple wood, you only need a piece of young wood and a rope, and you are ready to go. The series concludes with the ironwood rod, which requires a total of 15 ironwood planks, 3 tough leather, and 2 linen.

What baits are there? To fish effectively, you need bait. Although you technically do not need bait to fish in New World, the key here is “effectively”. Baits give you significant advantages for certain types of fish.
If you are a level 5 cook, you can prepare a cheese bait that improves the chance of catching rare fish in saltwater by 47%. If you are not a cook, you can search certain bushes and plants to obtain firefly bait. This increases the chance of catching rare fish in freshwater by a whopping 85%.
Basically, New World distinguishes between baits that attract rare fish and those that attract larger fish. In any case, small tidbits on your hook are worthwhile. The oyster bait improves your chance of large fish in freshwater by an incredible 500% – it’s definitely worth it.
