In New World , you have to run across the game world for many quests. It’s clear that many players wish for a mount that makes traveling significantly faster. However, there are none in the MMO, and a lore note even explains why: They simply cannot be tamed, those stubborn beasts!
Mounts are actually standard in MMOs. They not only provide increased travel speed but also the opportunity to collect new skins and complete achievements. In some games, they even increase the load you can carry.
However, New World completely omits mounts.
Why are there no mounts in New World? Those who explore the world attentively will find a note in the lore of the game world Aeternum explaining why there are no mounts.
It states that the animals in Aeternum are simply too aggressive. They are said to have even injured humans in attempts to tame them:
After a series of back injuries recently, the doctors of Aeternum are compelled to issue this warning to everyone transporting goods between settlements:
“Please remember that there are NO pack animals in Aeternum. No horse or donkey will pull your cart, carry your luggage, or tolerate a rider. All attempts to domesticate or re-domesticate these animals have resulted only in injuries and a lot of cursing.”
Therefore, it is important to transport ONLY as many goods as your own back can handle. Do not overload your backpacks or carts. We are not in the Old World here. In Aeternum, we all have to carry our own weight.
The world of Aeternum is small, and gathering is important
Here’s why that’s ridiculous: Those walking through the world of Aeternum are constantly overwhelmed by dangers. Wild wolves, undead, ghosts – therefore, our hero should also find a way to contend with a horse or a donkey.
Moreover, people managed to bring animals by ship from Europe to America in the 18th century, and by the end of the 19th century, this was done in droves. This should also be possible in a world with magic.
What is the true reason? The absence of mounts is probably not fundamentally grounded in the lore of the world.
Game Director Scot Lane explained to us from MeinMMO in an interview that the world of Aeternum is meant to invite gathering and exploration. Both are lost when players “rush” through the world and quickly ride from one place to another.
However, players have already found other methods to save time on their travel routes. One fast travel method is particularly macabre.
Another aspect against mounts could be grounded in the relatively small game world of New World. On foot, you can cross it in about 30 to 40 minutes. For other MMORPGs like Black Desert, it takes over 6 hours, as shown by a crazy YouTuber. Mounts would make the relatively small world of Aeternum feel even smaller.
What do you think about mounts in New World? Does the game absolutely need mounts, or can you do without them?
