A developer diary has been released for the new MMO New World . This is now being criticized by PvP fans, as the tasks for PvE players look like tedious work. Additionally, three errors were discovered in the presentation, which skeptics take as a sign that New World could appear unfinished.
This is the sentiment around New World: Since it became clear that New World only offers “optional” PvP, a portion of the alpha players is bitter and upset. They had anticipated a game where anyone could kill anyone at any time. This is how Amazon once presented New World.

On Monday, a new developer diary on “Settlements and Power” in New World was published online. Some users on reddit are now scrutinizing the details of the presentation with eagle eyes and spotting errors and problems.
This speaks for grind: The diary showed a screenshot of city projects. These are tasks or quests where players are supposed to cooperate to further develop the settlement.
The missions provide experience and gold, but also advance the city.
The image shows 12 of these tasks, each with 3 to achieve 4 different goals:
- For 6 of the tasks, you must kill 20 enemies of a specific type – in some cases, materials must be returned
- For 4 tasks, you must collect 20 crafting materials of a specific type
- For 2 of the projects, players are to loot treasure chests in temples
On reddit, it is criticized that the “Open World PvP” content is being replaced by “kill 20 wolves” PvE tasks, which is seen as the typical “grind quest” in games.
Others, however, argue that this is somewhat unfair. It is clearly about cooperative quests to develop a settlement. Such “community tasks” also exist in other games like Destiny 2, which is not that bad.

This is under criticism: The image is being dissected and several inconsistencies are noted.
- One task is called “Do you have bars?” with an iron bar shown under it – but for the task, players are supposed to find 20 silk
- Moreover, the quests “Wolf Slayer” and “Dangerous” have the exact same quest description
- And one wonders why moose should have “fangs” that need to be returned
Reddit users take this as a hint that New World is now hastily adding PvE content and that the game could appear unfinished and rushed.
After all, New World was only properly presented in December 2019, the new MMO is supposed to be released in May 2020.
Amazon responds to the criticism: We are still developing
This is how the developers react: One from the New World team has already responded and said: Some of the images are “Work in Progress” or just placeholders. Because New World is still in the “active development phase.”
Therefore, the developer diary has been supplemented with the note “The screenshots are from the alpha and may change.” However, the note is found only in the English blog post; it is missing in the German translation.
