Loot plays a big role in every MMORPG. Players are also excited when they get to snag a rare drop in New World. In this article, we at MeinMMO show you everything you need to consider to get rare items more often and how exactly “Luck” works.
What are rare items in New World? As of October 27, 2021, there are currently 5 different rarity levels in the game. Generally, the higher the rarity level, the more valuable and powerful the item is. Here’s a quick overview from common to extremely rare.
- Common – Gray background
- Equipment: No special bonuses or effects.
- Materials: You can find them almost everywhere or very often in the game (wood or stone, for example)
- Uncommon – Green background
- Equipment: Can carry a maximum of 1 special effect
- Materials: It already becomes tedious to collect certain materials here. For example, serpentine – a particularly sought-after and popular material among players. In this article, you will learn how to obtain these valuable stones
- Rare – Blue background
- Equipment: Can carry a maximum of 2 special effects (including gem sockets)
- Materials: Certain items take several hours to be obtained
- Epic – Purple background
- Equipment: Can carry a maximum of 3 special effects (including gem sockets)
- Materials: Certain items take several hours to be obtained
- Legendary – Orange background
- Equipment: Can carry a maximum of 4 special effects (including gem sockets)

Luck exists for two categories: The game differentiates here between:
- Monsters and chests
- Gathering materials
This means: If you have focused solely on the loot from monsters and chests, it does not affect the drop chance of materials obtained from gathering.
Is Luck really worth it? Those who have played Guild Wars 2 will know the value of Magic Find. It is supposed to increase the chance of rare items in the game but is generally not worth it. You don’t really notice a significant difference.
In New World, however, there is noticeably better loot. A significantly higher number of equipment items drop compared to average MMORPGs. Since you can increase your Luck by over 30%, the buff is especially noticeable with rare and epic drops.
Obtain rarer drops from monsters and chests with Luck equipment
In addition to the detailed article, we have also embedded a video about the Luck Guide to visualize the content for you.
How does “Luck” work exactly? “Luck” is an attribute in New World that can be increased with equipment and other methods. For example, if you have 30% more “Luck”, an item that normally drops with a 10% chance now drops with a 13% chance.
Which equipment gives more “Luck”? Every equipment slot can give you more Luck for monster and chest drops. Accordingly, there are 13 slots that you can equip with this effect.
- 5 slots for armor (head/body/arms/legs/feet)
- 1 slot for shield
- 3 slots for jewelry (necklace/earring/ring)
- 3 slots for bags
- 1 slot for the active weapon
Even more Luck with gems: Additionally, you can socket equipment that has gem slots with gems. “Flawless Gem” is the highest tier among gems and gives you another solid 0.5% “Luck” for each socketed armor, weapon, and jewelry slot.
What is the maximum “Luck” on loot equipment? The higher the armor rating, the more “Luck” the effect brings. Currently, an armor rating of 600 provides 2.8% “Luck” per equipment, which is the highest value you can achieve. However, there are some items that are exceptions and provide even more.
Thus, 33.6% more “Luck” is a feasible target. Weapons that provide “Luck” are obtainable only from specific quests or boss drops and are much harder to find; therefore, we do not include these in our calculations.

Luck equipment also brings rarer items when gathering or mining
Do I need different equipment for gathering? Yes. Because the equipment described above only applies to monsters and chests. For rare materials that can only be obtained by mining specific resources, you need different equipment. Each gathering discipline, such as mining, skinning, etc., requires its own Luck equipment.
Which equipment gives more “Luck” when gathering? Unlike with monsters and chests, there are only 7 slots that provide this value when mining. Here’s a quick overview.
- 5 slots for equipment (head / body / arms / legs / feet)
- 1 slot for jewelry – necklace
- 1 slot for the respective tool (axe / sickle / skinning knife / pickaxe)
What is the maximum “Luck” on mining equipment? Again, the higher the armor rating, the more “Luck”. An item with 600 armor rating gives you 5% per slot for the particular discipline. Necklaces and tools stand out because these slots can provide up to 10% more Luck.
45% more gathering Luck is therefore possible through your equipment, which is already a very decent number.
Further possibilities to increase “Luck”
Trophies provide you with extreme advantages: If you have the right trophies hanging in your house, you can additionally increase the Luck value. A “Small Loot Trophy” can increase the drop chance of rare materials from monsters and chests even further.
In our detailed housing guide, you can learn more about trophies, storage, and other benefits.
What about buff food? Cooked meals increase the chance for rare loot. Especially food at level 5 boosts the value immensely. Here’s an overview of the best dishes for more “Luck”:
- Salted, roasted assortment – Luck for mining
- Spicy meat pie – Luck for harvesting
- Hearty fish casserole – Luck for skinning
- Salted chicken with cabbage – Luck for woodcutting
