From September 9 to 13 in the morning, the Open Beta of New World was running. It was primarily meant to stress test the servers. However, some old and new problems surfaced. Many players are therefore doubting whether the release will actually take place in September.
What problems were there? Prior to the Open Beta, several improvements were promised. The servers were supposed to run more stable and queues should be reduced. Bugs and exploits were also worked on, as the latest patch notes show.
But in the end, New World was confronted with many old problems:
- There were hours-long queues right from the start.
- Some servers were restarted in between and had some downtime accordingly.
- There were still issues with performance. Low FPS were particularly criticized.
However, alongside the old problems, new ones also emerged. For instance, there was sharp criticism for a change in PvP that made higher-level players stronger. Players who are 4 or 5 levels higher than oneself were considered “practically unbeatable”. A PvP exploit was also heavily criticized.
In addition, there were frequent complaints about sound issues, like when sounds during battles or mining did not match the events in the game, ruining the atmosphere. These issues existed during the Closed Beta as well, but they were reported to have occurred more frequently now.
What do the players say about this? A large part of the users on Reddit for New World, in the MMORPG subreddit, and here on MeinMMO are still looking forward to New World and its release. The current problems play only a minor role.
However, there are doubts about whether the release date on September 28 can actually be met.
“A rough start and bad reviews can kill a game”
When will New World be released? New World was originally supposed to launch in May 2020, but it was postponed multiple times, to August 2020, Spring 2021, August 31, 2021, and most recently to September 28, 2021.
The last delay was primarily meant to create more time for fixing bugs and exploits and addressing server issues.
What are the players afraid of after the beta? Especially due to the server problems, queues, and weak performance, many fans of New World fear that there might be another delay.
Because the differences to the Closed Beta were rather small, and new problems have emerged, as MeinMMO reader Damian comments: “Yes, I am now also experiencing issues that I didn’t have in the Closed Beta, such as significantly worse FPS and lags. Besides, it takes about five minutes for the game to start.”
The user KarstXT emphasizes on Reddit that while server and performance issues should be acknowledged, exploits are a much bigger problem:
I believe people overlook that the main reason for the delay of the game is to eliminate bugs that would mean the end of the economy, which would cause significant, irreversible damage. Simply put, they cannot launch the game if they do not get rid of all gold duplicating bugs and other issues. It would undermine too much of the game.
One such exploit was also a topic in recent days on Reddit. Through a glitch in PvP, several players managed to reach level 60 within a day and level multiple weapons. This exploit is viewed very critically and players hope for a fix before release (via Reddit).
Is New World releasing despite the problems? However, there are also some players on Reddit who demand a release regardless of the issues.
- The user Puzzleheaded_Fun explains this demand as follows: “In terms of performance, I expect a rough start, but it would be just as rough if the game launches in 2023. But I’m optimistic that it can be handled in the first few weeks after launch, similar to how it went in the Closed Beta.”
- JRPGFan_CE_org even goes so far as to say that MMORPGs that create hype always have a rough start: “Every ‘hyped’ MMORPG always has launch problems when it first comes to market. There’s no way around it. The Open Beta was meant to test that. They also need to worry about MMO competition if they delay it further.”
In the next 6 months, MMORPG fans can look forward to the releases of Elyon, Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker, Lost Ark, and Guild Wars 2 End of Dragons among others.
