10 tips for New World that I wish I had known earlier
What types of PvP are there? Currently, there are four different types of PvP that you can usually start once you have joined a faction:
- Consensual duels
- PvP in the open world
- Wars in 50v50
- Outpost rush in 40v40 – however, you must have reached level 60 for this
The tips shown here are generally meant to help in all these contents.
Wear the right equipment in PvP
How is the equipment structured? The right equipment plays an even bigger role in PvP than in PvE.
Basically, the rule is: The heavier your equipment, the more armor and the less damage you receive. However, there is a damage bonus if you stay below certain weights, and the dodge roll becomes larger.
- Light armor – Up to 13 weight
- Advantages: 20 % bonus damage + large dodge roll and high agility
- Disadvantage: Little armor
- Medium armor – 13 to 23 weight
- Advantages: 10 % bonus damage + 10 % longer duration on crowd control + balanced armor values
- Disadvantage: Less armor than heavy armor, smaller dodge roll than light armor
- Heavy armor – Everything from 23 weight
- Advantages: 15 % more blocking + 20 % longer duration on crowd control + strong armor values
- Disadvantages: Immobile and slow
What is important for PvP?
- Especially in melee combat, you should almost always opt for heavy armor in PvP. This way, you can endure much more and are not easy prey for ranged attackers.
- However, as a ranged player, light or medium armors are more suitable.
- Ultimately, your armor weight also always depends on the right PvP build
However, it is generally important that light armor does not automatically mean you cannot also wear medium armor pieces, and as a player with medium armor, you can also wear heavy pieces. An example:
If you use the faction gear for PvP, the chest, legs, and another piece together weigh 7 kilograms. This allows you to wear two pieces of medium armor, either a helmet, feet, or gloves. They then weigh a total of 5.2 kilograms.
With a total of 12.2 kilograms, you remain below the magical limit of 13 and still have more armor and defense overall.
What else should one consider?
- Basically, your equipment should be repaired before you start PvP battles.
- Pay attention to the suitable gems in your equipment

Be prepared with food and potions
Why is this so important? In New World, there are two different types of food. On one hand, food that heals you directly, and on the other, buff food that gives you additional boosts and supports you excellently in combat. For instance, you can enhance an attribute by 40 points or increase your mana regeneration.
If you have more attributes or more mana, you have an advantage in direct combat. For duels, we do not recommend the most expensive buff food, while for wars you shouldn’t hold back, after all, you want to hold the territory.
Besides the right buff food, potions especially make a difference. With them, you regain health or mana quickly, giving you an advantage over the enemy who does not have a potion with them.
Constantly use your stamina, as it regenerates quickly
Why is this so important? Stamina is a resource that is used for the dodge roll. It regenerates extremely quickly, which is why you should use it constantly. A full stamina bar is a wasted resource.
With its help, you can:
- Evade enemy attacks
- Create space between you and the enemy
- Get closer to the enemy
- Activate some passive effects
Especially in melee combat and with heavy armor, usage is highly recommended. Since you only make a small jump, you don’t need to time the use strongly and can still evade a heavy attack from your enemy.
However, it is important that the stamina value should not fall to 0. Otherwise, you cannot use the dodge roll until your stamina is back at 100 %.
Animation-cancelling is key
What is animation-cancelling? This technique is about interrupting a long animation that takes unnecessary time with another action.
The animation of the long dodge roll is particularly often interrupted with light armor. Because if you let it complete, you stand still for a short moment and lose time. There are 3 ways to cancel the dodge roll:
- Sheathe weapon (“X”) – if you want to use the weapon again immediately afterwards
- Change weapon – if you want to use the other weapon immediately afterwards
- Use a skill that involves movement, such as the charge from the greataxe
But animation-cancelling does not only work with the dodge roll. Attacks with long animations can also be canceled with these tricks. If you want to delve deeper into this, we recommend the video from Studeee. He has looked at various weapons and possible combos:
Weapon effects are not transferred
How do the effects of weapons work? Many weapons offer active and passive effects, such as a weapon-bound buff that stacks upwards, or an active skill like Berserker on the axe.
However, if you have an active buff and then change the weapon, you lose that effect. So pay attention to when you switch your weapon and when you should rather wait.
We have gathered more useful tricks around combat here:
Always go for the backline
Why is this important? In larger battles in the open world, in the outpost rush, or in wars, it is particularly important which enemy you focus on.
In melee combat, you usually encounter well-armored enemies who hit you with heavy weapons or sword+shield and are difficult to defeat. However, their damage is usually not that high.
In the backline, however, are the damage dealers and healers. They are much more dangerous and also easier to kill. So try to focus on the backline and ignore the melee fighters in the front unless you are assigned to protect your backline from enemy attacks.

Learn all weapon skills to read your opponent
Why is this important? If you know your opponent’s weapons, you understand what attacks exist and which attacks you should definitely avoid. This is a huge advantage.
This way, you won’t be suddenly surprised by a strong combo or held in CC for too long.
It is advisable to experiment with a few weapons or at least read the different skills even at lower levels before entering the first PvP battles.
Bonus: You will die a lot and that’s okay
New World is not a typical MMORPG where the right rotation or the equipment alone makes the difference. Especially in wars and in the outpost rush, a lot depends on skill and the right strategy.
However, you will learn this skill and strategy over time. In the early stages, you will die more often, and that is completely fine. Practice makes perfect.
However, if you familiarize yourself in advance with equipment, food and potions, the basic combat system, and the opponents’ abilities, you will have a huge advantage over average players.
