New World will release the new expansion Rise of the Angry Earth on October 3rd. This brings not only a new max level but also many other changes. We want to give you some tips now to help you prepare perfectly for the launch.
How do I prepare? Since a new max level and new max gear score will be introduced with the new expansion, you do not need to farm equipment. However, there are several small things you can do to start well.
These include collecting gypsum and faction tokens, leveling your professions, or stacking experience points to reach the new level 65 faster. If you are completely new to New World, you should first reach level 60 and level the various weapons.

Collect Gypsum, but no Shadow Shards
What happens to Gypsum? Gypsum has been used to increase your skill so far. This will change with the expansion. You should be able to reach gear score 700 quite naturally. However, Gypsum itself remains useful. You need it to:
- Craft materials for the new artifact equipment
- Change the perks on your artifact equipment
- Craft named items at gear score 700
The resource, which you can earn daily in several ways, remains extremely important. Here you can find out how to quickly get Gypsum: This is how Gypsum works in New World.
What happens to the Shadow Shards? These were previously needed to upgrade equipment from 600 to 625 and can be earned by creating Gypsum impressions of the equipment.
After the expansion, however, they become useless and can be exchanged for gold. One Shadow Shard only brings 0.1 Talers. So, it’s not worth converting Gypsum into Shadow Shards or farming the resource in general.
Collect Faction Tokens, as the merchant gets updates
In New World, there are three factions you can join. In the faction, you can accumulate reputation while simultaneously farming tokens. For a long time, these tokens had little use, but they can currently be exchanged for chests that help you level gathering professions like logging faster.
Before the expansion, you should collect many faction tokens. On the one hand, the chests are useful, and you already get Gypsum from them, and on the other hand, the merchants will be expanded with a new tab with Rise of the Angry Earth.
Here you can find purple equipment at gear score 650, legendary equipment at 675, and some useful crafting materials. Additionally, there are bonus talers if you complete the first 3 faction missions of the day.
Level the old professions to 200, but not necessarily higher
With the new expansion, crafting disciplines will be revised. All will be raised from level 200 to 250. This way, you can obtain stronger equipment, new buff food, or even a special XP buff that unlocks at level 205 through music.
This is surprisingly important as it increases the experience for gathering professions like logging or fishing. And those are exactly what you want to quickly improve with the launch.
To be perfectly prepared for Rise of the Angry Earth, you should have all professions already at 200. You can level them beyond 200, but that won’t help you beforehand. Only after you reach level 250 post-release will the bonus levels from before be displayed again.
Optional: Stock up on materials
As the crafting disciplines are increased to 250 with the expansion, you need to have many materials ready for leveling. Especially the lower tiers, i.e., T1 mats, are in high demand again. You can go out and gather fresh wood or iron, just like you did at the release.
On Reddit and YouTube, it is recommended to buy these from the AH as it will get even more expensive with the release of the expansion. But even now, the prices there have risen significantly, making farming your own worthwhile.
Otherwise, there are materials that can only be crafted once a day, like Asmodeum. This will also be needed for crafting equipment.
Stock up on legendary equipment for recycling
With the new expansion, the gear score will be raised from 625 to 700. Therefore, you do not need to try improving your equipment until then. However, you should hoard any equipment you receive until then, especially the legendary.
Because by recycling these, you can obtain “Dark Matter.” This is a new material needed for crafting.
You can even use your remaining Shadow Shards to upgrade purple equipment to legendary and then store it in the chest to recycle it at the start of Rise of the Angry Earth.
Collect food for your mounts
A new feature in the game is the mounts, which you first need to level up. You can do this by completing quests and participating in races but also by crafting food for the animals. And exactly that you can prepare for in advance.
Right from the start, you will learn a simple recipe that requires the following items:
- 1x Barley
- 1x Honey
- 1x Water
- 1x Milk
All these materials have already become a bit more expensive, so it is worth gathering them yourself. More about the mounts can be found here:
Guide to the mounts – Unlocking, upgrading, and receiving rewards.
Stack bonuses for your experience points
If you want to quickly level your character and the crafting disciplines right at launch, you have two options to prepare in advance:
- You can collect the buffs available in the Battle Pass or for real money in the shop. This option is quite self-explanatory.
- You can gather research notes or chests that directly grant experience points upon use.
You get the research notes by collecting Strange/Abnormal/Unusual Ore, pollen, or whatever pertains to the profession. This is randomly dropped when mining materials. At the respective crafting station, you can create the notes from them.
The chests, in turn, can be obtained for faction tokens, which we already mentioned earlier in the guide.
You can collect the notes and chests and use them right after the expansion release for a small head start.
Complete the current Battle Pass for buffs and further rewards
If you log in now, you can focus on the latest Battle Pass:
- This already brings a weapon booster at level 3, for example for the new flail that is being introduced.
- At level 5, you receive 500 luck tokens, which you can theoretically use for shop items or later for a premium version of the Pass.
- At level 8, there is the gathering XP booster.
- At level 9, two Gypsum Orbs.
At higher levels come talers, more Gypsum orbs, XP boosters, and even some weapon and armor chests. The Pass can be filled with various daily tasks like killing certain monsters or participating in dungeons or PvP, but also with major seasonal achievements.
In the meantime, the Battle Pass was even a reason why I actively played New World:
Bonus: Get the Heart Rune if you haven’t done so yet
With the October 2022 patch, the new area Brimstone Sands and the Heart Runes were introduced. These are an additional ability that is not bound to weapons but to this rune. They deal good damage and usually provide versatile bonuses, such as immunity to CC or healing.
You unlock them by completing the quest “Secrets of the Heartgem.” For this, you must first play a part of the story.
How far you need to go and what Heart Runes are available is revealed in this guide: Guide to the Heart Jewels, the new ultimate ability. If you already possess the Heart Rune, you can of course skip this point.
