New World differs from traditional theme park MMORPGs. This is why some players make mistakes that could actually be easily avoided. We at MeinMMO have identified 7 classic beginner mistakes so that you can avoid them.
What is this about? These 7 beginner mistakes are about general things that you can easily get wrong without thinking much about it. We will reveal what is problematic about them and how you can do better.
If you are looking for general tips on New World, you will find them in this guide: 10 tips for New World that I wish I had known earlier.
1. You don’t keep an eye on your weight
What’s the problem? New World places a lot of importance on weight. There are two components where you can make mistakes:
- On the one hand, your inventory has a weight overall. If it is too high, you can no longer fight properly and move more slowly.
- On the other hand, your equipment has a weight. This weight plays an important role.
How can you do better? For problem 1, it is generally important to keep an eye on your inventory weight. You can see it permanently at the bottom right of the screen next to your skills. If the weight is too high, you may need to drop some items from your inventory.
Problem 2 depends entirely on your preferred playstyle:
- With light armor, you deal 20% more damage and have a wider dodge roll. However, you also receive significantly more damage.
- With medium armor, you deal 10% more damage and spend 10% less time in crowd control. However, the dodge roll becomes smaller.
- With heavy armor, you only have a tiny dodge step. However, you take less damage, spend 20% less time in crowd control, and have increased block chance.
However, always pay attention to the weight of your armor, otherwise you may be surprised that your dodge roll is suddenly gone.
Bonus tip: Repair your gear regularly!
2. You are spending your area XP incorrectly
What’s the problem? Over the course of your gameplay, you will accumulate reputation in the areas, for example, by killing monsters and completing quests. However, many only use this progress for short-term bonuses.
They unlock additional experience points or faster earning of area reputation. However, this is only short-term thinking.
Once you have reached level 60 or maximized the reputation of the area, you will no longer benefit from the bonuses.
How can you do better? You should think long-term about the reputation bonuses. Particularly effective are:
- Lower crafting fees
- More storage space
- Lower costs for the trading post
3. You don’t have a real “capital”
What’s the problem? New World gives you freedom when leveling. You can choose the area where you want to complete quests and you must travel through all areas for the main story anyway. This invites you to level in all areas and cities.
But that’s a mistake.
How can you do better? Choose a fixed city where you want to quest. Set your inn or your first own house there and level up there with the help of settlement quests and the faction board.
A fixed headquarters brings several advantages:
- You only gather reputation for one area and unlock better bonuses
- You get to know the surroundings and routes
- You store your items and materials in one place and not in different cities where you forget them
The best cities for your personal capitals are Immerfall and Windkreis. They are centrally located, allowing you to explore the world from there. However, it is also helpful to choose a capital that belongs to your faction.
4. You don’t buy a house
What’s the problem? Many players hesitate to buy their own house at the beginning. But that is also a mistake.
How can you do better? From level 15, you can own your first own home. You should do this for the following reasons:
- Every house provides a fast travel option. Depending on its size, the cooldown is between 2 to 4 hours. However, this can be reset using Azoth, which is cheaper than fast travel with Azoth.
- You receive buffs through trophies that help you in the game.
- You gain additional storage space.
The houses cost between 5,000 and 20,000 coins, but in the end, the investment is definitely worth it.
5. You’re not traveling properly through the world
What’s the problem? In New World, you often have to cover long distances and tedious walking routes. But just walking straight takes too long.
It is better to know the small tricks and nuances when traveling.
How can you do better? There are several tricks.
Trick 1 is that you make a larger dodge roll when wearing light armor. This allows you to cover more distance when using a dodge roll while running.
Trick 2 builds on the first trick. If you cancel the dodge roll just before the end, you won’t get stuck in the animation thereafter – the so-called aftercast. To do this, switch weapons just before the end of the roll. That way, you won’t stop.
Trick 3 is related to fast travel. The heavier your equipment is, the more Azoth it costs to teleport to another city.
Trick 4: Just die if you have no city nearby but want to quickly hand in your completed quests in a settlement. You can respawn directly in the city after death.
Trick 5 involves spreading your free fast travel options widely. You can travel for free to the inn, your first house, and starting from levels 35 and 55 also to house 2 and 3. If you distribute these options well throughout the game world, traveling will be easy!
Trick 6: Collect all the fast travel points and cities you can find along the way.
6. You’re not fighting correctly
What’s the problem? New World offers a completely different combat system than many MMORPG players are used to. However, there are many nuances in combat that you should pay attention to and to which we can give you tips.
How can you do better? First of all, the rule is that you should experiment a lot, especially at the beginning. You should try out different weapons and can reset your attributes for free until level 20, which is important for the different weapons.
It is also important that you should either block or dodge incoming attacks from enemies. This saves you important health points.
Furthermore, a useful tip is that you can land guaranteed critical hits:
- With ranged weapons, a headshot is always critical
- In melee combat, you have to hit your enemy from behind to land a crit

7. You’re not saving on taxes
What’s the problem? Every company that owns a settlement can set the taxes that are levied there. However, not every company is fair.
How can you do better? Orient yourself to savvy tax experts and find the place that charges the lowest taxes. There you can carry out your crafting and trading activities.
