Bungie released the new launch trailer for Destiny 2: Lightfall and it had a lot to offer. An important detail you may have overlooked, as it showcased an iconic weapon from Destiny 1, which many veterans have cherished.
What happened in the trailer? Bungie released a new trailer for the launch of Destiny 2: Lightfall on the evening of February 23, 2023. This one again depicts the conflict between Darkness and Light, but this time more intensely than previously assumed.
Guardians from Destiny 1, along with Amanda Holliday, fly around the Pyramid Armada and try to stop it with attacks. However, it appears that the Vanguard seems to have little chance, and many Guardians are filleted by the Witness and then destroyed in a shockwave.
What’s particularly interesting is the intervention of the Traveler, as it transforms into a kind of “Destiny Death Star,” trying to burn away the Darkness with its laser, which causes red flowers to bloom on the pyramid ships.
However, it is soon put in its place, and more snippets from Lightfall follow, with an important detail many might not have noticed. It concerns a weapon that will reportedly return soon according to the trailer.
Khvostov – A rustic assault rifle with a lot of character
What kind of weapon is this? In the trailer, it is the Khvostov. This automatic rifle had a brief but impressive role in the new launch trailer for Lightfall. However, it is not a flashback, but a current scene in which a Lightfall Titan with DLC armor holds this weapon in their hands.
Once upon a time, there were Guardians who acquired the white, standard version of this weapon from the NewLight campaign because it was really good. However, it then had a broken scope and could not be infused.
After this trailer, it is very likely that this iconic weapon will soon be played by Guardians in a new splendor and in a new version.
What makes the Khvostov special? The Khvostov is a rustic, reliable, non-futuristic rifle that players could obtain as their first weapon in Destiny 1. Many Guardians use it primarily in PvP, as it was very accurate and deadly – even in its “Standard” rarity.
In the last DLC “The Awakening of the Iron Lords”, an exotic variant of the rifle with many customization options was introduced, which no weapon in Destiny 1 had offered before. The weapon was also very popular among Guardians.
With Destiny 2, the rifle made a comeback for NewLight, but only in its “Standard” rarity. What’s interesting about the weapon is that it doesn’t offer anything special. It’s just a solid rifle without powerful perks as Guardians know them today, yet that alone was enough to make many Guardians’ hearts race.

How could the Khvostov return? Bungie didn’t hide the rifle in the trailer for no reason. One should recognize it and know that the weapon will return in some form. Since a ritual weapon named “Ecliptic Splitter” has already been announced for Season 20, there are still two alternative options for Bungie to bring back the rifle:
- a new strike weapon – With a Normal and Adept version
- a new exotic weapon – An exotic variant like the Khvostov 7G-0X from Destiny 1
Most likely, the rifle could appear as an exotic variant, as the Khvostov 7G-0X offered many customization options and fire modes in Destiny 1. So, it is quite possible that this weapon could then be forged to your liking in the Enclave, similar to Revision Null.
