Many MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XIV are increasingly introducing solo content so that players can enjoy the titles on their own. A single-player game on Steam is now taking the wrong approach and trying to mimic an MMORPG from the late 1990s or early 2000s.
Which game is it? We are talking about Erenshor, which is set to be released in 2024 for PC via Steam. The game is described as a single-player experience that draws on MMORPGs from the past. Thus, it differs from classic MMOs that offer separate single-player content.
The title cannot be played with other players, but it has many features from classic MMORPGs. This includes:
- Monster hunting
- Completing quests
- multiple character slots
- a shared bank
- login screen
The open world is said to offer unique areas that can be approached at one’s own pace. The regions are dotted with cities, dungeons, forests, caves, and much more.
In a video, developer Brian Burgee from Burgee Media presents what he has been working on for the past four months:
At first glance, the title looks like an MMORPG. But looking behind the facade, we find that it is a pure single-player game. Although numerous players roam the environment, they are merely simulations.
The NPCs behave just like real players would. For example, they can send us group requests to take down a boss together.
It goes even further: It is possible for us to create a guild and have NPCs join it. We can earn the favor of the NPCs, for example, by killing other NPCs that the guild member does not get along with.
It is indeed possible to kill every NPC and eliminate entire towns. Don’t worry, we won’t miss any quests because every NPC can respawn. However, they won’t be very pleased with us anymore.
So why not a proper MMORPG? Brian Burgee dedicates the title to all players who have too little time for a real MMORPG and can no longer adhere to fixed schedules for raiding. Many of you indicated in a survey that you usually play MMORPGs alone instead of in groups.
With Erenshor, players who prefer to play alone can once again immerse themselves in the world of an MMORPG without being dependent on others.
Furthermore, there will be no transactions, as is often the case in free MMORPGs.
