Iñaki Godoy plays the main character Monkey D. Luffy in the new live adaptation of “One Piece”. In an interview, he talked about what he hopes for the Netflix series and how it feels to take on such a major role.
This month, the new live-action film adaptation of the popular manga series and anime One Piece will be released on Netflix.
In an interview, the lead actor Iñaki Godoy spoke with Gamesradar about the live-action series adaptation and how much pressure he felt portraying such a well-known and beloved character as Luffy.
Here you can see the official trailer for the One Piece series on Netflix:
“The whole world should know them”
The interviewer asks the lead actor how he would introduce the Netflix series to people. He feels that it is difficult to convince others about live-action adaptations of animes or mangas.
In response, Iñaki Godoy states that the series is made by people who are themselves great fans of the pirate adventure: “We love the manga, we love the anime.”
The only thing they want to achieve with the live adaptation is to honor the work of Eiichiro Oda and inspire even more people to enjoy the good story. “And the whole world should know them.”
Even though the actor is well aware of how popular One Piece already is, he believes that even more people should learn about it:
I mean, so many people already know One Piece. But I want your grandpa to know what One Piece is. I want your grandma – I want everyone to know what One Piece is. And the people who are already fans should be able to relive those iconic moments.
And there’s something very special about seeing your favorite characters as real people. That has a special magic.

“It is a great responsibility to honor the work of a man for more than 20 years”
Then Iñaki Godoy is addressed about the great popularity of the manga and the anime and asked if he felt a lot of pressure playing the main character.
The actor fully agrees. He also explains why it is an important task for him to do justice to the role:
It is a great responsibility to honor the work of a man for more than 20 years, you know? He has been writing it since he was 17.
It’s not just about honoring Mr. Oda, but also honoring the anime. Mayumi Tanaka has been playing this character for so long. There are so many people who grew up with Luffy, the Straw Hats, and the world of One Piece. You want to respect and honor that.

However, the actor playing Luffy also adds that he learned one important thing from One Piece. Even when you have to fulfill a difficult task, you have to find a way to still have fun. And there was plenty of that on set, just like “a lot of love.”
Overall, Iñaki Godoy looks back positively on the shoot and says:
“And like any adventure, it was exciting. I was so thrilled to be part of something so big and incredible, and it is an exciting adventure.”
