A new horror game on Steam has a special twist. As a ghost, you can play as furniture pieces to attack ghost hunters.
On Steam, you have seen just about every quirky title, but an upcoming horror game should draw your attention a bit longer. We are talking about “Midnight Ghost Hunt,” a 4vs4 PvP game in which four ghost hunters face off against four ghosts – and you can play as a piece of furniture.
What kind of game is this? Basically, Midnight Ghost Hunt is a mix of Ghost Busters, Dead by Daylight, and Evolve – but in any case, it’s even more chaotic.
As ghosts, you have the ability to possess just about any object within an abandoned house. You can hide in a vase, an old knight’s armor, or a chair. These “possessed” objects can be used as weapons. For example, you can jump from behind as a chair to temporarily take out the ghost hunter.
Those who prefer a bolder approach can distract the ghost hunters by simply making a few objects float – or disguise themselves as a ghost hunter in plain sight. At least until a ghost hunter critically checks with a spectrophotometer why they can’t hear that one ghost hunter in the voice chat.
Ghost hunters, on the other hand, have a solid repertoire of weapons and tracking options. For example, they can make the astral “footprints” of the ghosts visible, place traps in choke points, and – as is fitting for the best “Ghost Busters” style – collect the essence of defeated ghosts with their vacuum cleaner.
Both ghosts and survivors choose special perks, allowing for adaptable gameplay.
After 5 minutes, the ghost hunters become the hunted
The special aspect: If the ghost hunters have not managed to find all the ghosts by midnight (which corresponds to approximately 5 minutes of gameplay), the tables turn. The ghosts are empowered, all previously captured ghosts are released, and the ghost hunters become the hunted. A fight for survival begins, as the ghost hunters frantically try to avoid the attacks of possessed objects while the ghosts unleash their full power to bring a painful end to the hunters.
Although the ghost hunters can still win after midnight, it is significantly more difficult – but not impossible. It just requires more hits on the ghosts and quick reactions to evade numerous attacks.
By the way, ghosts cannot simply wait silently in any object for 5 minutes. Anyone who remains motionless in one spot will eventually be discovered. While it may make sense for one or two ghost players to primarily hide, it is rather a game of active cat and mouse, not “I sit motionless in this lamp and wait”.
This way, Midnight Ghost Hunt follows a game principle that is already known, where the antagonists are initially weaker and disadvantaged until luck turns in their favor – as some might already know from Evolve with the monster hunting.
When can you play? Although there is still no official release date for Midnight Ghost Hunt, the opportunity to play is not far off. From January 28 to January 30, there will be a closed beta, to which many interested players will again be invited. If you want a chance at access, simply select the game on the Midnight Ghost Hunt Steam page and express your interest in the beta playtest there. With a bit of luck, you will then be invited to the next test version at the end of the week.
