The new game “Blackwake” officially launched on Steam and has received strong reviews in Early Access: 85% liked the multiplayer naval FPS. For those who want to engage in a refined naval battle, Blackwake could be a good option.
This is Blackwake: In Blackwake, exciting naval battles are at the forefront. You can hire your own crew and choose from a large number of ships, from the junk to the bomb ship.
The maps are also versatile. There are:
- Island landscapes
- Volcano maps
- Ice worlds
- A gigantic storm
In addition, there are alternative modes. For example, teams can compete to raise a treasure chest – of course, preferably before the other team. There’s also a siege mode where you must attack a castle.
Long road to release: Originally, Blackwake was conceived as an idea in 2013, as the developers felt there was a lack of exciting games focused on naval battles. An initial Kickstarter campaign failed – prompting the developers to abandon the originally intended simulation character and move more towards casual gameplay.
This led to the final version of Blackwake, whose Kickstarter was successful in 2015. In 2017, it entered Early Access and became a success – according to the developers also because the PUBG beta servers were down at that time and streamers were looking for something else to play.
Thus, a lot of players landed in Blackwake, who supported it through Early Access. On February 20, it officially launched on Steam – and is receiving good reviews.

Positive reactions to Blackwake in Steam reviews
Here’s how the reviews look: So far, Blackwake has received 11,801 reviews, of which 85% are positive. A strong value for a game that has just come out of Early Access. In the last 30 days, Blackwake had 79% positive reviews on Steam.
This is what players praise:
- The weapon mechanics work well
- Playing with friends is especially enjoyable: “Very well-made team play. There is always something to do on a ship, and it requires a lot of personnel. When everyone works well together, one can be very successful,” says user “[OG2K]huegie“.
- “The best naval game there is. The only thing I wish for is a better damage system. In the images on the store page, you could see how boards were blown out, but in the game, it’s just a small hole. Moreover, the hole caused by cannonballs is the same every time,” says user “MrDeeds“.
- “This game perfectly represents what naval battles would have looked like in older times. I would recommend this game to everyone. The only downside is the bugs,” says user “Crazyninja77“.
It is precisely these bugs that take center stage in critical voices. Additionally, the servers may not always hold up, which can sometimes lead to long wait times for a match.
For everyone who wants to engage in exciting naval battles with a few friends, Blackwake is still worth a look. Currently, it costs €7.37 on Steam (including a 10% discount until February 26, regular price €8.19).
