In South Korea, the beta for Ragnarok Begins has started. It is a new MMORPG for PC that takes place somewhat before the story of Ragnarok Online. For fans of this old MMORPG, the images shown are a true nostalgia trip.
What kind of game is this? Ragnarok Begins is the latest installment in the game series that has produced several MMORPGs already. However, in this specific case, it is a side-scroller, which means you primarily move right or left while the camera follows your character.
Otherwise, you can expect the usual MMORPG content, including:
- 4 basic classes, each with 3 different specializations
- A non-target combat system
- Various quests, achievements, and dungeons
- 6v6 arena PvP
- Guilds to team up with other players
- A colorful world where fans of Ragnarok will feel immediately at home

What has happened now? On September 1st, the closed beta started in Korea. Accordingly, you can now find plenty of gameplay videos about the game on YouTube. So, if you have an eye on Ragnarok Begins, you can take a closer look at the latest installment.

12 different classes and a lot of nostalgia
What is it with the classes? Ragnarok Begins features an interesting class system. At the beginning, you choose a main class. The options are:
- Swordsman
- Archer
- Magician
- Scholar (Acolyte)
Each of these classes can be played until the end or replaced by one of two additional specializations. So, you can play as a Magician, Elementalist, or Summoner if you initially chose the Magician class.
Why does nostalgia play a big role? Ragnarok Online is an MMORPG that was released in 2002 and was successful worldwide. In 2005, at least 500,000 players from Europe were reported to have registered for the game (via Gravity) and for many, it was the first MMORPG ever.
Nostalgically, they reminisce about the old times.
The original version was discontinued in 2018 for data protection reasons. However, there is a European version from 4 Games and some private servers that keep the game alive here.
With Ragnarok Begins, a new PC MMORPG might come that fills the gap from back then.
Release of Ragnarok Begins still in 2021 in Korea
When will Ragnarok Begins be released? The MMORPG is set to be released in Korea in the second half of 2021. Whether and when it will come to us is still uncertain.
The developer Gravity only disclosed that they want to provide more countries with games related to Ragnarok in 2021. Whether Ragnarok Begins is included and whether we count as one of those countries in Europe is not known.
