On Steam, the graphically enhanced version of the complex cult hit “Dwarf Fortress” has been enjoying sustained popularity among connoisseurs. However, one mode that the game has in the ASCII version is still missing: the Adventure Mode. In April 2024, it is expected to be released. It sounds like a feast for role-playing gamers who are looking for something entirely different.
What is Dwarf Fortress?
- Two brothers have been working for 22 years on their version of a fantasy world: players continue to expand a dwarven fortress, digging deeper, encountering monsters and ores.
- Dwarf Fortress has earned a legendary reputation over 22 years as a complex, intricately nested simulation. Amazing stories circulate about dead cats and spilled beer in taverns. However, the game existed for 20 years only without graphics, represented through ASCII code. Therefore, the game was hard to access.
- But ultimately, the brothers needed money and released Dwarf Fortress with graphics on Steam. The game was a complete success at its release in December 2022, and even now it has an average of nearly 1,200 online players on Steam.
Role-playing mode Adventure Mode
is still missing on Steam
Which mode is missing? Dwarf Fortress has a specific mode in the ASCII version called the “Adventure Mode” where you directly control a dwarf or a group and experience personal adventures in the fantasy world, instead of managing the fortress like a drunken dwarven god and looking down at the dwarves as they go mad because they can’t find space to craft but absolutely need to produce something.
Connoisseurs of Dwarf Fortress see the Adventure Mode as a brilliant way to bring the world of Dwarf Fortress to life.
The developers themselves describe their work on this mode as “a completely unique, rough experience that can be fascinating and frustrating.”
In the mode, you can (via steam):
- Engage in turn-based combat and target individual body parts
- Engage in role-playing – transform into a beastman and ride a larger beast, dance in a mead hall or insult the gods and become a giant rat
- Explore – you can visit your own fortress or settle in a village and later recruit yourself. You can fully explore the world.
What is the problem? The mode was missing at release because countless animations need to be graphically animated, and that hasn’t been feasible in terms of time so far.
In a blog post, the brothers have now announced that they plan to add the mode in April if all goes well.
Dwarf Fortress currently has 95% positive reviews on Steam and costs €29.
