Camelot Unchained – Will it ever be released?
This is Camelot Unchained: Camelot Unchained is a PvP MMORPG focusing on fortress battles. It stems from the idea of Marc Jacobs, the creator of the legendary Dark Age of Camelot.
In the game, there are 3 factions in a constant war. You join one and fight for them. Thousands of players are supposed to participate in the battles, and fortresses are supposed to be completely destructible.
This MMORPG also relies on various classes and an expanded Holy Trinity, with crafters playing an important role as well. The UI for the skills visually resembles GW2.
How has the development gone so far? Camelot Unchained has probably been in development the longest of the titles on this list. It started with a Kickstarter campaign that launched on April 2, 2013. Back then, it raised 2.2 million dollars.
Camelot Unchained is also financed through support packages and injections of funds. The development began rather bumpy and was initially hindered by its location on the East Coast of the USA. In 2016, the studio moved to the West Coast and launched the first beta.
However, this beta, unlike many current games, was a real beta:
- There was only limited playtime on weekends
- There was no open world
- Testing was done in various scenarios
- NPCs were supposed to increase population and stress servers but had hardly any other functions.
Here is where Camelot Unchained stands in March 2020: Although the beta has been extended with some content, the MMORPG is still a long way from completion.
In 2020, there was a significant announcement from the developer studio. However, it was not about the MMORPG, but about the PvE game Colossus. This title apparently aims to satisfy investors, generate new revenue, and draw attention to their proprietary engine.
The announcement was not well received, and Mark Jacobs apologized and offered refunds for Camelot Unchained. While he promised that the MMORPG would continue to be developed, a release in 2020 currently seems almost impossible.
