The new MMORPG TitanReach (PC) financed itself through crowdfunding and recently started a free Early Access phase. However, there is now a possibility that TitanReach may never be completed, as the developers have run out of money, as they announced on Discord.
What is TitanReach? The MMORPG from developer Square Root Studios promises classic open-world action:
- You travel through the game world and complete quests and world bosses
- During this, a story about powerful Titans is told
- TitanReach does not use classes and allows your equipment to determine the playstyle, similar to New World
- In PvE, you can expect dungeons and raids
- There are professions such as fishing and smithing, and one focal point is the economy
- There is open PvP in certain zones where you can even lose all your equipment
The twist of the game was supposed to be that there are many abilities, but you can only use 5 of them in combat. This was meant to provide a special tactical component.
In August, the MMORPG launched a free Early Access version. This was meant to attract players who would pay for future access to the alpha and beta.
A first glimpse of the game is offered by the video from MMO YouTuber TheLazyPeon, who tried a version from June:
Why is the development now paused? In the official statement, it is stated that further work on TitanReach is being put on hold because the developers have run out of money.
A total of 14 developers have worked on TitanReach since the launch of the Kickstarter campaign in December 2020, but they only received the minimum wage. Some of them have already been laid off.
Nevertheless, the game is not to be discontinued directly.
Developers seek investors to realize TitanReach
What will happen next? The MMORPG is to continue as a hobby project for now. Work is still being done on it, but not full-time. Some new hobby developers may be brought into the team who have previously expressed interest in the continued development of TitanReach.
The existing Early Access servers are to be shut down, with the exception of one world, where playing can still continue.
Currently, there is a search for investors behind the scenes, but without them, there is likely to be no release of the game.
Are there refunds? The revenues from the past months are said to have already been spent on development, so there are likely to be no refunds.
However, players who purchased a Founders Pack since the start of the Early Access on August 9 will receive a refund. The money has been held back so far.
TitanReach raised over $200,000 through crowdfunding, but that was not enough
How has the development of the MMORPG gone so far? Rather mixed. In the first 16 hours, it was able to raise over $50,000 on Kickstarter. However, the campaign, which lasted a month, fell far short of the target.
Instead of the hoped-for 363,745 euros, only 114,971 euros were raised. The hype that initially existed faded quickly.
In the further course, free playable versions and backer packages for the paid alphas and betas that were to come were released. According to the website, a total of $206,419.20 (175,166 euros) was raised (via TitanReach). Too little to fully realize the game.
Did you have hopes for TitanReach or has this MMORPG completely passed you by? And would you play it if it is still realized?
A current Kickstarter project is a new MMORPG that is inspired by Pokémon. It promises battles in an open world and the possibility of assembling a monster like Frankenstein:
New MMORPG reminiscent of Pokémon – shows battles between trainers and self-created monsters
