With Project Ragnarök (also The Ragnarök), NetEase is planning a new AAA MMORPG for PC, consoles, and mobile. A new trailer has now been released that looks beautiful and contains some interesting details. However, the combat scenes make many viewers skeptical.
What kind of MMORPG is it? Project Ragnarök offers an open-world gameplay experience with a mix of Norse mythology and Asian style. The focus of the story is Ragnarök, the battle between gods and giants.
- The MMORPG has been in development for 5 years already.
- You will be able to move around the world in every conceivable way, including climbing, gliding, swimming, and trading.
- There will be an active combat system similar to God of War, with controls adapted for different platforms.
- Variety will play a crucial role, which is why there will be no daily quests, but dynamic challenges instead. Dungeons will also be randomly generated.

What has happened now? The developer NetEase has introduced new games during an event. A new trailer for Project Ragnarök was also shown.
The impression is beautiful, but the combat scenes indicate a possible problem.
Trailer shows beautiful graphics, but do they really look like this?
What can be seen in the trailer? The trailer shows various scenes where the player character moves through the world.
In doing so, he rides on a huge troll, climbs a mountain, and fights against other monsters. Another beautiful image is created as the character glides through a battle and over a village. Additionally, a scene is shown where the player takes a stone from the environment and rolls it onto enemies.
From the 45-second mark, some combat scenes are shown. However, these are the ones that make viewers skeptical.
What is the problem? On one hand, NetEase itself states that the shown graphics are a demo and not the finished product. Therefore, Project Ragnarök could look even better or worse at release.
On the other hand, the combat scenes appear very choppy and give the impression that they were recorded with only a few frames per second (FPS). And performance plays an important role in MMORPGs.
Even in large games like ESO or GW2, there are still problems. However, there are usually more players active than on the test servers of The Ragnarök. Accordingly, many comments under the video are skeptical:
- Bruno Araoz writes about the trailer: “15 FPS game. Why do all new MMOs/RPGs look like this when they show their fights and abilities?”
- T N is very concerned about the lags: “You know the game will be bad if the trailer lags.. and that’s not even real gameplay.”
- Максим Иванов sarcastically writes: “5 FPS during combat, very good.”
However, many positive voices are also accumulating under the trailer, praising the graphics. Even in terms of upvotes, the thumbs up clearly lead – 75 to 7 (as of May 21 at 9:30).
What do we know about the release of Project Ragnarök? The new MMORPG from NetEase is being developed in Unreal Engine 4 and will be released first for mobile and PC, and later for consoles PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
A beta for The Ragnarök is expected to start in 2021, although it is not yet known whether players from the West can participate. Later, the MMORPG should be released worldwide.
Specific information about the release date of the game is still not available, but it is likely that it will come only in 2022.
