With Summoners War: Chronicles released on March 6, 2023 in Europe, America, and Japan on Steam, a new MMORPG is now available that can also be played on mobile and relies on gacha mechanics. In the past 7 days, the game has received 90% positive reviews and MeinMMO has taken a look at the reactions to the game.
Mobile, gacha, autoplay – many MMORPG fans have already tuned out at these keywords.
However, this is precisely what the new Summoners War: Chronicles on Steam relies on, and if you haven’t clicked away yet, we’ll show you what fans are celebrating about the game and where it receives criticism.
Because currently, at least the reviews are through the roof. For an insight into the style of the game, take a look at the trailer:
Not for classic MMORPG players
What kind of game is this? Summoners War: Chronicles is an MMORPG with anime graphics and an action combat system. You play as a summoner, collect monsters via a loot box or gacha system, and gather tons of materials to activate upgrades or enhancements.
Like many other games in this genre – such as Genshin Impact or Tower of Fantasy – Summoners War: Chronicles is pay-to-win and pay-to-progress. If you want to play competitively in PvP or achieve fast progress, your wallet will have to contribute.
However, similar to Genshin Impact, Summoners War: Chronicles can also be enjoyed as a free-to-play player. It satisfies the collecting passion, offers a complex combat system, and plenty of content.
What do players say? The reviews on Steam present a clear picture (via Steam). There are players who prefer the classic MMORPG mechanics and see here the most egregious cash grab available on Steam.
- Monstermoe: “Trash! […] Not even started and already I can spend money.”
- Headless Pilot: “A typical ‘pay as much as you can’ game.”
- Crazyus: “This is not a game, this is a reward simulator.”
And indeed, the drop rates are sometimes absurdly low. In some gacha boxes, known here as scrolls, the chance for certain 5-star characters is 0.0002%. However, often multiple of these characters are in the box, which increases the chance again.
However, there are many players with high playtimes who were already active in Summoners War: Chronicles before the release in the West and say a lot of good things about the game:
- John Forest: “Creating 4- and 5-star characters is very expensive. But if he concentrates his resources on the 3-star units, then you can easily complete the story content. I have not encountered any ‘difficulty wall’ and have been playing for 40 hours.”
- Riktor: “Recommended if you like gachas. Not recommended if you despise microtransactions from mobile games.”
- Teuing Ah Teu Nyaho: “It is not pay-to-win if you are just looking for a PvE game for casual play. If you want to play the PvP Arena, it is full pay-to-win.”
- Giip: “I actually just wanted to test it for an hour or two. But hey… it has exceeded my expectations and here I am, now with 122 hours and recommending the game.”
Similar to back then with Diablo: Immortal, opinions are divided. If you are generally prone to quickly pulling out your wallet for small things in such a game, then better stay away from Summoners War: Chronicles.
If you are looking for a fast-paced anime MMORPG for casual play that keeps you occupied on the couch after work, then check it out.
Summoners War: Chronicles is not for everyone’s taste, but it already has many fans and admirers. It keeps you well occupied and can continue running in autoplay mode if you have no desire or time.
When browsing the reviews, it’s noticeable that there are really many players with over 1,000 hours in the game. This speaks for the amount of content but also shows the grind that can be involved.
