The new MMORPG Prism 2033 has just been announced on Steam and sets itself apart from the usual medieval setting with a modern metropolis like in GTA 6 – with a touch of crazy sci-fi.
What kind of game is this? Prism 2033 is a new MMORPG for PC and mobile that significantly distinguishes itself from the usual genre representatives. While there are quests and game modes like in a theme park, the combat system and movement are more reminiscent of GTA 6.
Instead of axes and bows, there are assault rifles; instead of griffins and horses, there are sports cars; and instead of castle sieges, there are interstellar fleet battles.
Prism 2033 goes a step further here and doesn’t just replace the same functions with assets from the near future, like riding horses with driving sports cars; instead, the combat system feels more like a shooter.

Between Superheroes and Sims
What sets the game apart? Even though Prism 2033 calls itself an MMORPG, the first gameplay looks more like a very colorful genre mix. The developers place a lot of emphasis on the AI NPCs, with whom you can not only go on dates but also have your own children.
NPCs can also be chatted with and will respond in full voice thanks to AI voices to input. The NPCs are also expected to react to gunshots, fire, or other events around them, for example, grabbing a fire extinguisher or taking cover.
Even virtual people have a life cycle. They not only pursue their hobbies, work, and lives during the day, but they also age over time.
How does the MMORPG play? While the AI NPCs are a highlight for Prism 2033, the gameplay doesn’t focus much on a classic MMORPG. Instead, you fight with assault rifles and drive back and forth in cars.
However, there are also superheroes in the MMORPG who can fight enemies with colorful abilities. Whether the developers will implement character switching like in Genshin Impact is still unclear. However, when questing, you can run from A to B like in a typical theme park MMORPG and deal with friends and foes alike.
Particularly interesting are the announced guild battles. Here, players are supposed to team up with their guild to fight in large space battles against other players and compete in PvP.
What is the deal with the parallel universes? Prism 2033 not only takes place in the colorful metropolis where the player’s character as a detective must hold enemies accountable, but also in bizarre portal worlds. These lead to various places where there are also fantasy creatures like dragons.
This is likely to provide variety and breaks up the modern glossy setting a bit. In the initial gameplay snippets, there are already events to see, like a T-Rex that haunts the city and its inhabitants.
If Prism 2033 hadn’t described itself as an MMORPG, it would be more of a bizarre competition for GTA 6, as many MMORPG elements like leveling, loot, or character progression haven’t been visible so far. At the same time, shooter MMORPGs are rare, which might mean that the title could completely revolutionize the genre with its new approach.
