Eternal Tombs was formerly known as War of Dragnorox and is an MMORPG with a very special twist. The developers will regularly intervene in the game world, ensuring that no two days feel the same. A gameplay trailer has now been released that showcased the new combat system, which is supposed to be much more action-packed than in 2021.
What kind of game is that? Eternal Tombs describes itself as an “Old School Sandbox MMORPG” for PC, with a clear focus on PvE. At launch, there will be an open world with 30 areas, dangerous monsters, and up to 19 different raids. Strong endgame content is important to the developers.
- There are 6 different classes – Warrior, Ranger, Bombardier, Manipulator, Chloromancer, and Bonestitcher. The last two can take on a healer role.
- The equipment system is modeled after EverQuest. There will be no general Gearscore; rather, the various attributes and bonuses on the equipment will play a big role. This is supposed to keep every drop from raids or bosses interesting.
- There will be a detailed mount system.
- The Dungeon Master can activate special events, quests, or boss monsters. There are also hidden passages that they can open and close, and the resources can be altered by them. This is supposed to bring a lot of dynamism to the game world.
- It is being developed in Unreal Engine 5.
- The entire development of the game is funded, and there will be no crowdfunding. How exactly Eternal Tombs will be financed has not yet been revealed, but there shouldn’t be a cash shop. All skins and cosmetics will only be obtainable in-game.
Until a few weeks ago, the MMORPG relied on a tab-targeting combat system, which the developers eventually found too boring. Therefore, it has been completely overhauled and turned into an action system.
You can check out how the combat system and the game in general look in this new trailer:
Many revisions, but a difficult trailer
How is the trailer received? Somewhat mixed. Praise is given for the idea with the Dungeon Master, the overall structure of the MMORPG, and partially for the shift to the action combat system. However, in the battles, some expected more.
The YouTube user Orlyy writes: “I love the concept and hope you will succeed. But the animations and the game flow need the most work; it feels like a bunch of assets were thrown against the wall and a trailer was made. I will keep an eye out, but I am not euphoric.“
Criticism also comes from the user Kensterrr, who particularly disliked the sound effects and the loud music during the combat presentation. A commentator therefore suggests reworking the trailer and moving the presentation from the end to the beginning. The core contents of the game are good.
Overall, while the combat system looks decent, it does not compare to games like Black Desert, ESO, or the newly announced Chrono Odyssey, which at least looks incredibly spectacular in the trailer.
What’s next for Eternal Tombs? The MMORPG was originally supposed to be released in 2023. This date has since been discarded by the developers, who no longer provide any timeframe.
In the FAQ, they state that they want to develop strong endgame content first before it comes to a release.
It is currently unclear when an alpha or beta test will take place. The next video on the game is set to be released on September 7. The story will be the focus there.
What do you think of Eternal Tombs? Do you find the MMORPG appealing, or does the new trailer put you off a bit? And what do you think of the system regarding the Dungeon Master?
Another game starts its beta next week, and the first gameplay gives hope: After an hour of gameplay, I’m sure – Palia is not a classic MMORPG, but exactly what I need right now.
