A new blockchain-based MMORPG called Ateron has been announced. The developers highlight the NFTs through which players can supposedly earn real money. However, the appearance and structure of the game world are quite striking as they resemble World of Warcraft.
What kind of game is this? Ateron aims to be a new, classic MMORPG. It relies on a Holy Trinity of tank, healer, and DPS, and offers various classes with “their own identity.” There are no major surprises in terms of gameplay and content either:
- There is supposed to be an open world to explore
- Dungeons and raids are an important part of PvE
- There will be a crafting system
- PvP takes place in special arenas
The unique aspect of the game is that you can earn the currency $ATRN. You can use it to buy certain NFT tokens or to vote for future updates of the game.
However, the most striking feature of Ateron is the graphics, which in the cinematics bear a strong resemblance to WoW.
Ateron recreates Stormwind and the courtyard of the princess in the trailer
Where does the game remind of WoW? So far, there have been two trailers for Ateron. In the first one, you can see some distinctive areas that strongly resemble WoW:
- Stormwind, the capital of humans. You can see the streets and buildings, as well as the harbor.
- A courtyard with melons and a barn that suspiciously looks like the courtyard of a princess, a pig from the Elwynn Forest.
- A dungeon that takes place in a prison and strongly reminds of the dungeon “The Deadmines” from WoW.
However, this trailer was surprisingly deleted on the night of February 8. One reason for this could be the video by KiraTV, who pointed out Ateron, but especially its similarity to WoW.
You can still see the trailer in his video:
Weak gameplay in the second trailer: In the trailer with real gameplay, there is still a certain similarity to WoW; however, the game does not look nearly as detailed and nice. The game is supposed to be developed in Unreal Engine 5, but it looks graphically rather weak.
The interface feels completely inconsistent and also uses a very unusual font. According to the developers, the game is currently in alpha and should become more beautiful by the release.
The first information about Ateron emerged in September 2021, when social media channels were created.
Many ways to earn money, but do you want that?
Should you keep an eye on Ateron? If you like NFTs and want to earn money through an MMO, maybe. Because that’s the big promise of Ateron.
But good gameplay is likely not what the game will offer.
Here too, KiraTV provided a very good explanation. For years, MMORPGs have been in development that had larger teams and more money available than Ateron. However, even the biggest ones like Star Citizen or Ashes of Creation struggle with implementation. This makes it unlikely that Ateron will be the next big hit.
What do you think about Ateron? And how do you generally see the development towards NFTs in MMORPGs? Feel free to write it in the comments.
