In a newsletter from the developer City State Games, there was new information about the upcoming MMORPG Camelot Unchained. Besides some words about new areas, the most exciting statement is probably that NPCs will never drop equipment. We at MeinMMO explain this feature to you here.
What is Camelot Unchained? The Kickstarter MMORPG, announced in 2013, has set itself a goal: group-based gameplay and a lot of PvP. With this, the game was able to captivate many backers and raised over 2 million dollars. However, since then, players have been waiting for a finished version.
Nevertheless, Camelot Unchained is considered a dark horse for PvP players and boasts large battles and teamwork between players, which is emphasized greatly.
At the center of the game are the three warring realms around which the PvP action of the game is supposed to revolve. You can fight either as a Viking, Arthurian, or Tuatha Dé Dannan and also choose one of the different races. For the latter, you can for example play as a giant that keeps growing.
Furthermore, Camelot Unchained impresses with 29 planned classes and a true MMORPG veteran as team lead. Marc Jacobs is considered the mind behind MMORPGs like Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online.

What’s new? In a newsletter, the developers have now released new information about how looting in the game is generally supposed to work. The newsletter clearly explains that the focus is placed on cooperation with other players, and this is also reflected in the loot.
This means that NPCs, meaning monsters and non-player enemies, will never drop equipment. There will be no way to obtain weapons or armor from such enemies.
Also, finished equipment will not be found in any chests or in the world. Much more, Camelot Unchained focuses on crafting and trading among players. Everything you can find are materials that you can then use to create equipment.
You can of course only craft the type of equipment you have specialized in. This aims to encourage you to ally with other players, trade, and help each other.
Why is this exciting? Camelot Unchained follows a very unusual path with this approach. In most MMORPGs, you get your equipment exactly from where Camelot does not want to give it to you.
As players, we are used to running dungeons and hunting monsters to get the equipment we want. The equipment principle of Camelot is thus the exact opposite of what we know.
Whether the concept will ultimately work, we can only speculate at this point. It is definitely an exciting idea that fits into the overall concept of the game. The fact that the potential and community are there for it to work has already been proven by the Kickstarter campaign.
When can I play this? This is currently very hard to say. Originally, the first beta was already announced for March 2016 but was then postponed to July 2018. Although the game was able to gain new investors after the beta, it did not meet the planned release in 2019. There is currently no new planned release date.
According to fan estimates, the studio is currently about five years behind the original schedule for the game.
What do you think of the concept in Camelot Unchained? Did you perhaps even support the campaign yourself? Are you looking forward to the game? Let us know in the comments.
So far, the mood in the community has been rather negative, as they first received a PvE game for their money.
