For many MMORPG veterans, Dark Age of Camelot is one of the best PvP MMORPGs of all time. Therefore, the excitement was high when the head behind the game, Marc Jacobs, announced in 2013 that he was building a successor. But where does Camelot Unchained stand in 2024?
What kind of project is this?
- “Dark Age of Camelot” was an MMORPG from before WoW and is still considered by many fans to be a unique MMORPG experience. This was due to a sophisticated PvP system in which entire realms fought against each other.
- The head behind the game, Mark Jacobs, then tried his luck with Warhammer Online, but was bitterly disappointed by the gaming industry (especially EA) and launched his own project in 2013, with his own money, money from investors and backers: Camelot Unchained.
- But 11 years later, many dreams have burst and several scandals have passed over the game: The low point of development so far was in 2020, when they wanted to develop a “second game” to support Camelot Unchained – which was not well received by the fans at all.
Vague good news and a new beta for 2024
This is what the developers say now: At the turn of 2024, Camelot Unchained still does not have much to show, but the mood in the team and around the game seems to be significantly better than a few years ago.
There are a few warm words for Christmas:
“Developing games is a journey full of twists and changes, and if you accompany us on this wild ride, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We wouldn’t want it any other way.”
The studio CSE received a large financial injection a year ago, at the end of 2022, and now the team says that 2023 was a year full of “exciting developments.” They look forward to finally sharing them with the players.
In January 2024, a new build will be released for the “Beta 1 Backer,” and here a completely new user interface will be presented (via camelotunchaiend).
It is said that this interface is also a strong foundation for 2024.
Mark Jacobs also personally announces “good news” for 2024, but he does not reveal exactly what it looks like.
The fight with the gnawing tooth of time
This is what it’s about: “Camelot Unchained” is overall a sobering example of “MMORPGs that are created through crowdfunding.”
Jacobs and his team have taken on an extremely ambitious project. They are developing their own systems, their own engine, and are facing a multitude of difficulties. Among them is how to find new developers who want to move away from the shot in the province and how to keep finding new money.
After 11 years in development, Camelot Unchained now has the problem that everything that looked “fresh and cool” at the presentation now appears outdated.
I mean, we reported on MeinMMO six years ago about an initial beta – it feels like that happened in another universe. Did cars even exist back then or were people still riding to work on horses or dinosaurs?
While there hasn’t been much negative news about Camelot Unchained in the last year, actually, the studio has been quite quiet for the past year: After the funding round, there was likely a lot of work to be done internally.
Let’s see if the announced news and updates in 2024 will bring more attention back to the MMORPG.
In the worst case, Camelot Unchained could end up like Crowfall – a lot of hope, a long development with many delays, and when released, the game feels so outdated that hardly anyone gets excited and it literally fizzles out.
