Twin Drums, an indie studio from Berlin, is currently working on The Wagadu Chronicles, a new MMORPG for PC and Mac. The project fully focuses on the role-playing factor of the genre and features a unique setting.
What kind of game is this? In 2022, The Wagadu Chronicles announced itself as an MMORPG focusing on RPG, not grind. The game is inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, one of the most famous and largest role-playing games in the world.
As in D&D, you create your own character, but here you choose an “ancestral line” instead of races. This determines your origin and roughly your role in this world. You should be able to fully immerse yourself in the role you choose and create:
- There is no focus on equipment with better stats or grind
- There are also no classes, only predefined skills
- The story plays a bigger role
- In groups, you should be able to interact with a “dialogue mode”
- Questions about the game are asked in “off-world lobbies” to avoid breaking immersion
The Wagadu Chronicles describes itself as Afro-Fantasy and seems to be set in a fantasy version of Africa. You can check out the gameplay and world here in the alpha trailer:
Alpha 2 starts “soon” – Joining is easy
When does the Alpha start? In the latest tweet from the developers, it is stated that the 2nd Alpha starts “soon”. There is no specific date yet.
Shortly before the announcement, however, new information about the game was provided, including some details about the magic system. Many spells apparently orient themselves to well-known templates from Dungeons & Dragons.
The game is based on a set of rules that should be compatible with the 5th edition of D&D. This will even be released as its own pen & paper.
How can I join? Unlike the first Alpha of The Wagadu Chronicles, you do not have to pay 140 € on Kickstarter. Instead, it should be enough to simply sign up for the newsletter:
You then have the chance to be invited to the alpha test and will also receive a 300-page lore book as a PDF. This serves as the basis for both the MMORPG and the corresponding pen & paper.
Whether the game will later be Free2Play, Buy2Play, or follow a subscription model is not yet known. A specific release date is still pending. However, a corresponding book is supposed to be released in autumn 2022.
