The Wagadu Chronicles (PC) is a new MMORPG developed by an indie studio from Berlin. It is supported by the LoL developer Riot Games and has a very unique setting. The first alpha is set to start in February.
What kind of game is this? The Wagadu Chronicles is an MMO that places great emphasis on role-playing. In line with this, there are hundreds of pages of lore, and the setting should also be usable in Pen&Paper Dungeons and Dragons 5e. The strong focus on role-playing is highlighted by these unique features of the game:
- The focus is not on grinding or increasing stats, but on story
- During character creation, you choose different ancestral lines with unique histories
- There is supposed to be a dialogue mode in groups, which works with multiple players and is reminiscent of conversations with NPCs
- To avoid jeopardizing role-playing, there are special “Off-World-Lobbies” where players can exchange ideas and ask questions
The setting of the game is special as well. The developers themselves describe it as an Afrofantasy MMORPG. You have no classes, but use skill presets. There should be dozens of abilities, but not all are geared towards fighting; some are intended for exploration or side activities.
Additionally, temporary skills are planned that you can find while exploring and that will help you in specific situations.
The economy, on the other hand, will be in the hands of the players, as is common with most sandbox MMORPGs. All equipment is supposed to be editable by players using an editor if they have the right skill. This is to prevent every piece of armor from looking the same.

Alpha of the MMORPG starts in February, supported by Riot Games
What is new? As the developers recently announced on Twitter, the first alpha of The Wagadu Chronicles will start in the second half of February.
However, to gain access to the alpha, you had to donate at least 140 euros via Kickstarter in advance. Currently, it is no longer possible to purchase such a package.
Unlike many other MMORPGs, there is also no function to register on the website and be randomly invited to an alpha or beta.
How does the MMORPG finance itself? The Wagadu Chronicles started with a Kickstarter campaign, through which they were able to raise 163,910 euros.
Additionally, they are supported by the LoL developer Riot Games. The company invests in various start-ups and aims to strengthen underrepresented founders. This includes Twin Drums, the studio from Berlin.
What model the MMORPG itself will follow, i.e., Free2Play, Buy2Play, or subscription, has not yet been revealed.
