Warhammer: Odyssey is an MMORPG for Android and iOS that aimed to bring real PC feeling to the smartphone. Accordingly, it does not utilize autoplay. However, the servers have been offline for almost a week. The reason for this is an attack on the game’s database. The developer has now hired an outside firm to solve the problem.
What is the nature of the attack? On March 17, the developer Virtual Realms announced that the servers of the two games Celtic Heroes and Warhammer: Odyssey would be taken offline. The company cited a security breach as the reason.
The databases are said to have been hacked by one or more individuals. The complete code of the games was extracted and even publicly leaked.
Initially, it was unclear whether account data was also affected, but the developers stated that these are stored securely on the servers of Apple, Google, and Facebook.
Meanwhile, Virtual Realms has engaged an outside firm to close the security hole. However, due to additional DDoS attacks on the games, the servers of Warhammer: Odyssey will remain offline for the time being.
The return of Warhammer: Odyssey does not have a fixed date yet
What exactly do the developers say? In a statement, the developers addressed their players via Discord. It states:
Last week, we found that one or more unauthorized individuals had accessed our internal network and acquired the source files of Warhammer: Odyssey and the database. This weekend, this information was uploaded and made publicly accessible. Our team has obtained this data, and we are now investigating the extent of the leak and whether sensitive player information is included.
Since Warhammer: Odyssey employs a one-time login for account creation (Google Play, Apple, and Facebook), we do not store passwords for these accounts, and your Google Play, Apple iCloud, and Facebook accounts are not compromised.
However, there will be a rollback of the servers to a time before the attack occurred. The developers currently do not know exactly when that will be:
As mentioned, Warhammer: Odyssey will require a rollback of the database to a time before the breach, but that time has yet to be determined. All Sovereigns purchased and acquired since then will be fully refunded. Once the servers are back online and we observe the situation, we will re-enable downloads in the Google Play and Apple App Store as soon as it is safe.
I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused all players, and we understand your frustration at having to wait a few more days to play again.
When exactly Warhammer: Odyssey will be back online is still unknown. It is certain that this will not happen today, March 23.

What kind of game is this? Warhammer: Odyssey is basically a classic MMORPG that you play on your smartphone or tablet:
- You create your hero from the 6 classes Archmage, Shadow Warrior, Witch Hunter, Warrior Priest, Slayer, Engineer.
- You complete many quests, including side missions from well-known NPCs from the Warhammer world.
- You explore places like the city of Marienburg or the Drakwald Forest, known from the Warhammer Universe.
- It is possible to form a Mercenary Company, which is essentially a guild.
The unique aspect compared to many mobile MMORPGs is that you really have to play and fight actively. There is no auto-play, not even automatic walking to quest objectives.

What has been the reception of Warhammer: Odyssey? Mixed. In the first reviews, it received a fair amount of praise. However, the game now has 3.0 stars on the Play Store and 3.5 stars on the App Store, placing it more in the middle of mobile MMORPGs.
Criticisms include monotonous quests, high grind with poor drop rates, and relatively weak graphics.
