Corepunk is a new, upcoming MMORPG from the Dutch indie studio Artificial Core. In a trailer, the developers present their project and include almost everything a game can have. The MMORPG is currently in Alpha, with Beta starting in 2020.
What is Corepunk? Corepunk is supposed to be an MMORPG with a “seamless world and fog of war”. The game features an isometric perspective, presumably playing similarly to Diablo or similar games. Corepunk is set in a post-apocalyptic environment with a comic look.
The trailer for the game apparently does not take itself too seriously. It starts with: “Rating pending. But let’s be honest, this is for adults.” Then, the developers present their game in an extremely humorous way:
When and where will Corepunk be released? The date for the Open Beta is listed on the official website as the fourth quarter of 2020. Interested players can already sign up for the Closed Beta.
Corepunk is currently only available on PC. The developers have not yet discussed ports to Xbox One and PS4 or even Xbox Scarlett and PlayStation 5. Information on the sales model will come later.
The Features of Corepunk
What is included in Corepunk? The features of Corepunk are widely varied and seem to aim to appeal to every clientele. Specifically, the developers mention:
- an open world to explore
- player-driven trading and crafting
- dungeons
- PvP
- day/night cycle and weather
- mounts
Each activity is supposed to be given a rating system so that players can compete with each other.
A special feature is the fog of war, which obscures some areas of the map until you enter and reveal them, so you won’t always know exactly what is happening around you.
What does the gameplay look like? The controls in Corepunk work through the mouse, while abilities are activated using the keyboard – similar to a hack and slash. Together with the MMORPG component, it sounds a bit like the project in which Diablo 4 is also evolving.
The roles you can assume are classic tank, healer, and DD with an additional support role. However, there will also be some “hybrid roles” that you can customize yourself. There are also good MMORPGs without this “Holy Trinity”.
Will it work?
This is how the game appears so far: There are numerous ambitious MMOs that may not be able to keep their promises. Although Corepunk makes some pretty big promises, the first glimpses of the game seem to indicate that everything can be implemented quite well.
The biggest advantage of the game is probably that the graphics do not take up the majority of the work. The developers can focus on the core features due to the rather simple comic style with an isometric perspective.
Corepunk also runs on the Unity engine. This has several features that make even larger projects easily achievable:
