Embers Adrift is a new MMORPG currently in closed beta. The special feature of the game is its pure PvE focus. In a State of the Game, new details about fast travel, areas, and extended testing times were shared.
What kind of game is this? Embers Adrift is a sandbox MMORPG where you should experience adventures your way. You explore an open world where only NPCs can become your problem. Because there is no PvP at all in the current state of the game.
- Embers Adrift relies on a specialization system for classes. At first, you choose from Defender (Tank), Striker (DD), and Supporter (Healer). At level 6, you then choose a second specialization and create a special class – from Defender and Supporter comes the Knight, from Defender and Striker the Juggernaut. This results in 9 different combinations, with the second specialization being changeable.
- Overall, the MMORPG claims to rely on a “Holy Trinity+”. This consists of Tank, Healer, DD, and Crowd Control.
- The focus is generally on group content. There are dungeons, raids, and challenges in the open world. Those who want to adventure alone can do so, but will miss out on some things. Even part of the story is said to take place in group instances.
- Embers Adrift does without larger quest hubs and boring farming tasks. All quests in the game are said to tell a story and provide larger rewards at the end.
- Crafting is said to play an important role.
- There are some elements that are intended to provide more immersion, including the absence of a minimap, unnecessary tooltips, and a reduced interface.
In general, Embers Adrift advertises that players should experience adventures with friends that they would later tell around a campfire.
Does Embers Adrift really completely do without PvP? For now, yes. However, the developers are considering bringing a duel feature. The focus would then be on passing the time while waiting. Arenas or even PvP in the open world are not planned.
Beta tests are now taking place all weekend
What’s new? Last, we reported on Embers Adrift at the beginning of 2022. At that time, new gameplay was presented, and the release was announced for 2022. Since then, quite a bit has happened:
- New areas and monsters have been introduced.
- The crafting system has been revamped and is now supposed to make all materials useful, regardless of what level you are.
- New bank slots have been introduced, which can be purchased with in-game currency.
- New armors and weapons have been created.
- Emotes have been implemented.
- New skills for levels 20 to 30 have been added.
- In May, a fast travel system was introduced, because the areas in the game are so huge. Each area gets a monolith that you must unlock first. Once unlocked, you can travel from one monolith to another. Currently, traveling is still free, but there is still discussion about it.
Also, in February, they began increasing the beta times. Initially, you could only play on the night from Wednesday to Thursday, but since June, the beta now runs from Friday at 8 PM to Tuesday at 8 PM. Additionally, in early March, the NDA of the beta was lifted.
We have included new gameplay by YouTuber SuperBitsandBob, who has already spent several hours in Embers Adrift:
Where is the game currently standing? Embers Adrift is currently in a closed beta. According to the developers, almost all areas planned for launch should be finished. The dungeons are also reportedly complete.
In crafting, skills, and animations, they are currently working on fine-tuning. Additionally, there were initial stress tests for the servers, including an event where all players gathered in one place to fight against monsters.
How can I participate in the beta? Those who want to play the beta must currently purchase a package that costs 50 euros. This includes:
- Access to the beta
- A special title
- A sword skin
- One day early access to the release
- One month of gameplay
How is Embers Adrift funded? Embers Adrift has no initial costs – you do not need to purchase a code for the game. However, it relies on a monthly subscription like WoW or FFXIV. In return, there is no in-game shop.
Wasn’t Embers Adrift once called something else? Yes, development on the game has been ongoing since 2018, originally under the name Saga of Lucimia. However, the developer team separated from one of its founders in 2021, which was probably one of the deciding factors for the renaming.
What do you think about Embers Adrift? Is this MMORPG interesting to you, or do the group focus and the rather weak graphics put you off? Feel free to write it in the comments.
