Camelot Unchained has been in development since 2013. The MMORPG is from developer Marc Jacobs, who became known for the popular PvP MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot. Since Camelot Unchained is intended to be the spiritual successor, anticipation for the game was high. Now the MMORPG finally receives a release date.
When is Camelot Unchained expected to release? As reported by MassivelyOP, Camelot Unchained is expected to launch “late next year”. Accordingly, we can expect a release by the end of 2025.
This means that a years-long odyssey may finally come to an end. Camelot Unchained has a long history behind it:
- Marc Jacobs started the development of Camelot Unchained in 2013. A Kickstarter campaign was launched to secure the funding for the MMORPG.
- The game has received several small financial boosts: in 2018, the MMORPG secured 7.5 million USD, and about four years later, there followed a financial cushion of 15 million USD.
- With the announcement of a secondary project in 2020, the development team angered fans. The community has invested millions into the development of Camelot Unchained, but instead, the development team focused on the PvE MMO Final Stand: Ragnarök.
- Fans are growing impatient, as the release of Camelot Unchained was already announced for 2019.
The long development time comes with the issue that the MMORPG no longer feels as “fresh” as it did 11 years ago. The state of technology has changed, which makes the ambitious project now seem “outdated”.
Hopefully, Camelot Unchained does not suffer the same fate as other crowdfunding MMORPGs:
Fans are not satisfied with the 2025 release
Why are fans so upset about this? Many users are expressing in a thread on reddit that Final Stand: Ragnarök has now become the main project of the development studio. Here, the early access phase begins in March, while backers of Camelot Unchained have to wait until 2025.
- This means fans would wait a total of 12 years for Camelot Unchained
- Final Stand: Ragnarök was only in development for 4 years
Many players fear that the development team will be forced to release Camelot Unchained at the end of 2025 due to other circumstances. User Neither_Ad5683 thinks, for example, that the EA phase of Camelot Unchained will be a disaster.
Some users accuse the studio of taking the money for Camelot Unchained just to finance the development of their own Unchained engine. User donlema writes, for example:
Your dream was Camelot Unchained. His dream was to take money from you and build a game engine that he could sell. Imagine that. Once a con artist, always a con artist.
Other users are pleased that they decided not to support the project back then or withdrew their funding.
If development continues under a bad star, Camelot Unchained could ultimately suffer the same fate as Crowfall: MMORPG was in development for 7 years – has to shut down after just 1.5 years, at least for the time being
