The new MMORPG Teredor (PC and Mobile) not only comes from Germany, but it is also set to be released initially only in Germany. In doing so, the game dares to try an exciting experiment with its monetization. It aims to do without an in-game shop while still remaining free-to-play.
What kind of MMORPG is this? Teredor comes from Germany and is being developed by former Blizzard employees. They want to bring back an old-school feel and mix it with exciting new features. The main inspiration is especially World of Warcraft, but before Wrath of the Lich King. “That’s when WoW was still fun,” the developers write on their website.
Graphically, the MMORPG relies on a pleasant, not very realistic graphic style, which, however, can score with hand-drawn backgrounds. In this way, you explore an open world in the 3rd person, which offers various biomes in 25 zones.
What are the features of Teredor? Besides the already known features, there is still much that the MMORPG has planned. Here is a brief overview of what Teredor aims to be:
- “Holy Trinity” class system of healer, tank, and dps
- 10 different classes that can also be changed during your journey
- Pets that not only look cute. Later, pets should be usable in combat as well as mounts
- Meaningful professions, such as the pet trainer who can teach animals new skills
- Dungeons for solo players, 3-man, 5-man, and 10-man groups
- World events, bosses, and raids
- PvP battles with up to 40 players and PvP arenas
- Housing
- Various factions
- Particular focus on player feedback and no in-game shop. Teredor should only survive on player donations
Old school can still work today:
“We are making a bet on the players”
No in-game shop, yet free-to-play: Especially in monetization, Teredor wants to try an experiment that hasn’t been done before. Although the game, when it is released, is free-to-play, it completely renounces the classic sources of income for this business model.
So there is no in-game shop, no extra currency, no pay-to-win or pay-to-progress items, and nothing comparable. Instead, Teredor wants to be completely financed through donations from German players. For example, through platforms like Patreon or directly through the game website.
In return for their donations, players receive smaller, personalized content in Teredor, such as an NPC with their name, a quest they can help design, or even their own small mini-game in the world of Teredor (via teredor.com).
Why the experiment? The developers say they want to build the MMORPG together with the community. This way, potential players should also be involved early in important decisions and processes.
The monetization is another step on this path. They hope that this will make players feel even more connected to the world of Teredor than they already do. At the same time, the developers want to ensure that fans fall in love with the game so much that they pay just because they want to support the game.
Release could take longer
When will Teredor be released? This is currently completely unknown. The first entry on the game’s website dates back to August 18, 2022, shortly thereafter there was already a playable demo at Gamescom. After that, things became quieter around the game.
Only on February 20, 2023 did the developers shed light on their monetization concept and explained what it’s all about. The studio has also set up a Patreon page, but there are currently still 0 supporters recorded (as of February 24, 2023). Everything indicates that the project is still in its infancy.
A specific release date is therefore still a long way off; the developers have not yet provided a timeframe. On the platforms themselves, they limit their statement to “PC and Mobile”; no further details are available yet. However, if you follow the concept of Teredor, this could also be decided by the community.
