Warhammer Online (Cover Image) was supposed to stand up to the genre giant WoW in 2008, but the MMORPG was shut down on December 18, 2013. Since then, fans of the franchise have been waiting for a new MMORPG. Now Nexon has announced that it has acquired the rights to a new Warhammer game. It is said to be a multiplayer game with a focus on PvE.
What kind of game will this be? Warhammer: Age of Sigmar is being developed by the South Korean developer Nexon and Games Workshop, a British company. The goal of both companies is to bring Warhammer into a “new, virtual world on PC, consoles, and mobile platforms” (via Businesswire).
The description of the game in the official press release sounds a bit like a mix of MMORPG and the Chinese RPG Genshin Impact:
- The new Warhammer game is intended to be a service game with regular new updates
- They state the genre as “PvE Multiplayer RPG”
- It is meant to offer many social features
- Players should be able to collect characters and fight with them throughout each season
- Each character has a unique story and gameplay
- The characters will be visually customizable
- The focus of the story is the fight against the followers of the Chaos Gods
When will the game be released? So far, there is no information on a release date. However, Warhammer Age of Sigmar is planned to be released globally and will also be translated into English and German.
So far, no further details have been shared. There are also no images or video material yet.
Who is behind the game? Nexon is known for developing and publishing MMOs and MMORPGs. They have developed titles such as Maple Story, Vindictus, Dragon Nest, and Dungeon Fighter Online themselves, and publish games like Elsword and Atlantica Online in Korea.
Age of Sigmar is set in a nearly completely destroyed Warhammer world
What is Age of Sigmar? Age of Sigmar is a tabletop game developed as a successor to Warhammer Fantasy. The first edition was released in 2015 and developed by Games Workshop.
Age of Sigmar takes place after the “End Times,” an event that nearly led to the complete destruction of the Warhammer world. According to the lore, the legendary hero Sigmar floated aimlessly through space until he was discovered and rescued by the great celestial dragon Dracothion.
This dragon led Sigmar to eight realms of mortal beings, over which Sigmar was then allowed to rule. He rebuilt the civilizations, but then the forces of Chaos struck again. It is likely against these that you will have to fight in the MMO.
Warhammer Online still receives updates from fans
What about other Warhammer MMOs? If you don’t want to wait until the release of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, you currently have two options:
- Warhammer Odyssey was launched in early 2021. This is a mobile MMORPG that completely avoids autoplay. However, it currently only has a rating of 3.1 out of 5 stars in the Play Store.
- Alternatively, you can still play the old Warhammer Online. It is continued by fans on a private server as “Return of Reckoning.” They even brought some major changes for the 13th anniversary of the game.
