The creators of the MMORPG Camelot Unchained have released their first game: Final Stand Ragnarök (PC) has entered First Access. In the game, up to 1000 players are supposed to fight against thousands of NPCs simultaneously, but initially, it starts with 10 players and 5 champions in a “First Access.”
What kind of game is this? Final Stand Ragnarök is
- officially a “match and lobby-based PvE game that focuses on action and co-op”
- unofficially, “FS:R” is like a detached PvE mode from the MMORPG Camelot Unchained, which focuses on massive battles.
The game is designed to eventually allow 1000 players to fight against thousands of NPCs in a massive real-time battle. Players fight at the end of the world in Norse mythology, Ragnarök, against hordes of enemies from Hel and must protect Asgard.
Hel is the realm of the dead in Norse mythology, ruled by the goddess Hel. She looks like Cate Blanchett, as we know from “Thor 3: Ragnarok.”
At the moment, the game is in “First Access,” starting with 10 players: The developers aim to experiment with additional modes, sometimes reducing it to 4 players and sometimes increasing it to 20 players.
In the current early version, heroes must protect the village of Odi in the frosty woods of Valhalla and maintain the defense established by Odin and the Aesir.
They face skeletons, liches, death priests, necromancers, and all the other friendly undead from Helheim.
Amazon, Berserker, and an Icy Rogue
These are the heroes of the players: Ragnarök offers players 5 heroes to choose from:
- Aella the Amazon – a bow shooter
- Bjorn-snur the Berserker – A man and his axe
- Gwen the Spearmaiden – she fights with her spear and has a mythical horn to summon spirits
- Jalbal-Sulth the Peacemaker – the hero has been “deprived of his life but not his honor,” he always carries a shield
- Yuki – the Ice-Demon – She uses stealth and the weapons “Kama and Kunai.” She also focuses on ice attacks.
How much does the game cost? The game is available starting at $15 in the store. The most expensive version costs up to $95.
You can buy the game here in the CSE Store (via store.camelotunchained).
Things to consider when buying: The game is still in a very early version.
Studio head Marc Jacobs says players should prepare for some frustration. The developers themselves haven’t encountered any major problems, but there’s no guarantee it will stay that way.
In the trailer, the developers ironically play with the bugs, missing content, and the raw version of the game, but also promise that many additional contents like crafting and combos will come and that they will never resort to Pay2Win.
The game is supposed to help the MMORPG Camelot Unchained
This is behind the game: The development studio City State Entertainment has actually been working on the MMORPG Camelot Unchained for many years. They are constantly missing any release dates and are only making slow progress.
First Stand: Ragnarök is now like a “PvE mode” that has been detached.
The developers say that this game helps them as a team immensely to advance the development of the MMORPG. According to developer statements from Discord, which were spread on reddit: Everything you do to the code in Ragnarök carries over into Camelot Unchained.
Studio head Mark Jacobs also says: If Ragnarök becomes the success they hope for, it will help Camelot Unchained because they will have more money to hire developers.
Fans of the MMORPG have harshly criticized the developers for months for developing this “side game.” They wish full concentration on Camelot Unchained.
As a result, there has been a really bad atmosphere surrounding Final Stand: Ragnarök from the beginning. In the YouTube trailer for the game, comments and likes are disabled, as they would probably have been flooded with flames from hardcore fans.
Camelot Unchained is considered one of the most interesting new MMORPGs in development by many MMORPG veterans who started with Dark Age of Camelot. The project was originally launched with crowdfunding, but that also brings problems, as we know:
