This month, a new live-action series about Pokémon will premiere in Japan. The first trailer now shows that the series will be very different from all the live-action adaptations that have existed for the franchise until now. Above all, however, the trailer evokes a truly nostalgic feeling.
What to expect: To address this upfront: an appearance of pocket monsters in animated form, as in other live-action adaptations, is not something you should expect in this new series.
The series PokéTsume
or in English Pocket Filled with Adventure
actually comes more or less without the little creatures. Instead, the series shows how a game has fascinated and brought people together for generations.
You can watch the trailer here on MeinMMO:
The story follows a young woman who moves to Tokyo and receives a Gameboy along with Pokémon Red from her mother. This makes her fall in love with the world of Pokémon.
The series follows her in her new life and through the new challenges that moving brings with it, and how the game influences her. From what is known, the series likely aims to show how the Pokémon franchise can bring people together and create new friendships.
What the trailer shows: Even though the trailer surprises by not featuring any animated little monsters running through the picture, many players probably feel a strong sense of nostalgia.
Because many clips from the old Pokémon game are shown, instantly taking you back to your childhood. All of this is accompanied by the fitting old music and some scenes that everyone can relate to in some way.
We see the young woman blowing into the cartridge and the Gameboy, something everyone has surely done. In another scene, she is sitting across from another player, and their Gameboys are connected by a cable. Just the old way of playing in local co-op.
Putting aside whether one finds such an approach interesting for a live-action series about Pokémon or not, watching the trailer is definitely fun with such small hints. You can hardly help but feel a little happy for the young woman.
Where can you find the series? The series premieres on October 19, 2023, on TV Tokyo. Whether other countries will be able to enjoy the release is yet to be known.
What do you think of the new series? Would you watch PokéTsume if it comes out here in Germany, or are you satisfied just having seen the trailer? We would love to hear your opinion.
